He was ably supported by Chris Phelan, 6th (and third V40) in 1:17:22, and also by Paul Mitchell in 1:23:22, giving SLH second in the team prize, and silver in the Surrey Champs team medal. Strength in depth was shown with Alex Halpin finishing in 1:24:37, Mark Burtwell in 1:27:23, and Simon Rosser in 1:30:02. Pam Ianella was our first lady home in 1:49:14, ahead of Jake Clausen in 1:51:15, Ayisha Hooper in 1:59:29 and Jo Farrar in 2:05:39.

Second claim Dave Freeman also had an excellent race, running 1:15:53 to finish fourth overall and secure the V40 prize.

The SLH track young Athletes gathered as a team for the first time at Kingsmeadow Stadium for the first match this season. With 7 teams competing, SLH finished 2nd, just behind the home team, Kingston.

With the threat of rain not being fulfilled, the competitors emjoyed good conditions on the day. This was held as a ‘double’ fixture, alongside another match, so at times seemed chaotic. This did, however, make for a good atmosphere, with a large crowd from 13 different clubs all supporting.

U13 Girls

Maya Bruney ran in the wrong race, but still came an excellent 2nd in the A 75m (11.2), with Vanessa La Fon winning the B 75m (10.9). Vanessa then won the 150m A string (21.0) with Zoe Collins 2nd in the B (23.3). Kalise Powell ran a PB in the A 800m (2:45.5) for 2nd place, with Sophie Foreman, recovering from illness, 3rd in the B (3:07.7). Maria Kavanagh continued her good form with a PB in the A 1200m (4:19.4) for 2nd place, with Tessa Billups winning the B string (4:33.6). Nicholette Pollard-Odle was 4th in the A 70m hurdles (14.5) with Vanessa 4th in the B string (15.4). The girls capped a good performance on the track with a win in the 4×100m relay. In the field, newcomer Reshae McPherson was 2nd in the A High Jump (1.20m) with her first ever attempt at the event. Alex Roberts again showed her jumping potential winning the b string also with the same height (1.20m). Maya easily won the Long Jump with a 3rd PB of the season in this event (4.08m) with Reshae 2nd in the B (3.20m). Zoe did well in a new event to come 3rd in the A Shot (4.29m). Well done girls.

U13 Boys

Saul Tompson had a rare 2nd place in the A 100m (14.0) but made up for it by winning the A 200m by a large margin (29.3). Laurence Rook was 2nd in the B 200m (31.2). Unfortunately the confusion of such a large match meant we missed the B runner in the 100m. A shame, as his time in the non-scoring event (15.1) would have made him 2nd in the B. Ben Foreman was 4th in the A 800m (2:42.8) with Aaron Wells 3rd in the B race (2:51.2). The 1500m was a fast race, where Laurence ran really well to come 2nd in the A string (5:16.9) with Tom Aubertin winning the B (5:21.9). Saul was back again to cruise to victory in the A 75m hurdles (13.7) and was part of the winning 4×100m relay team which rounded things off nicely. In the field, we couldn’t clear any heights with debutants in the High jump, but Louis Rossi-Jones was 2nd in the A Long Jump (3.72m) with Harry Wilson 5th in the B (2.59m). Kyal Truong-Clarke was 2nd in the A Shot with a huge throw (8.21m) with Ben Myburgh 4th in the B (3.93m). Well done boys.

U15 Girls

Shanice Harrison was 2nd in the A 100m (13.4) although given the same time as the winner, with Megan Waller 3rd in the B (14.1). Shanice the won the A 200m (27.4) with Ruth Myburgh running really well to win the B string with a PB (31.2). Ruth was then 3rd in the A 800m (2:44.4) but unfortunatel we had no B runner or anyone for the 1500m which was disappointing. Jahisha Thomas won the A 75m hurdles as usual (12.3) with newcomer Lauren King winning the B (14.0). The girls capped a great effort by winning the 4×100m relay with Lauren, Megan, Jahisha and Shanice. In the field, we had no High jumpers, but Jahisha won the A Long Jump with an excellent leap (4.84m) with Megan winning the B string (3.85m). Throwing sisters Chioma and Iyanni Obe-Adewole had a long day in the filed. Chioma, up against the Surrey champion in Shot and Discus, was 2nd in both. This despite a huge throw in the Shot (8.20m) and Discus (16.52m). she was also 3rd in the A Javelin (10.17m). Iyanni won the B Shot (6.53m), 3rd in B Discus (9.05m) and won the B Javelin (9.39m). Well done girls.

U15 Boys

George Gomez was 2nd in the A 100m (12.7) with Finn Nightingale 2nd in the B (13.3). Tyrie Obuks was 3rd in the A 200m (26.9) with Finn 2nd in the B (27.2). Tyrie then attempted the 400m for the first time, and was a creditable 3rd (63.1). In the 800m Richard Morris ran a well-paced race for 3rd in the A string (2:24.8) with Adam Atkins winning the B (2:28.3). James MacDonald ran superbly for a huge 30second PB for 2nd in the A 1500m (5:13.8). Richard was also 3rd in the A 80m hurdles with a PB (15.5). The boys finished a good 2nd in the 4×100m relay, but unfortunately could not get a 4×400m relay team together. In the field, George Gomez was excellent winning the A High jump (1.52m). Tyrie was 2nd in the Long Jump with a PB (4.66m), with Finn winning the B string (4.66m). Simi Obe-Adewole was 3rd in the A Shot (6.56m), 3rd in the A Discus (15.16m) and 4th in the B Javelin. George was also 3rd in the B Shot (5.72m). James was 4th in the A Javelin (22.16m). Good stuff boys.

U17 Girls

A team of 5 girls competed in as many events as they could and with a lot of success. Frederica Foster won the A 200m (26.1) and the A 300m (41.1). Harriet Field won the A 800m (2:28.4) and the B 300m with a PB (41.7). Amy Mitchell won the A 1500m with a PB (5:22.8). The girls also magaed to win both relays ! Hannah Field, Valentina Moskalenko, Harriet and Frederica winning the 4×100m and Harriet, Amy, Hannah and Frederica also winning the 4×300m. In the field, Hannah was 2nd in the A Shot (5.90m), with Amy 3rd in the A High Jump (1.30m) and Hannah winning the B with the same height (1.30m). Hannah was also 3rd in the A Long Jump (3.81m) with Val winning the B string (3.70m). Harriet won the A Javelin with a PB (22.50m). Excellent points from so few girls.

U17 Boys

With several missing this was tough for the older boys also. J Sharpe was 3rd in the A 100m (11.6) with Afam Obi-Adewole winning the B race (11.8). Ben Wynter was 4th in the A 200m (23.9) with Dylan Blake-Mills 2nd in the B (26.6). Sadly no runners in the 400m ! David Sidwell gave it his best shot in the A 800m for 6th place (2:37.1). Adam Guy was 2nd in the 1500m A (4:30.8) with Gregory Campbell running a PB in the B race (4:52.0). We had no hurdlers or steeplechase, but won the 4×100m relay right on the line ! Unfortunately no 4×400m this time. In the field J Sharpe was 2nd in the A Long Jump with an excellent leap (5.74m) with Neil Fuhrmann 2nd in the B (4.97m). Neil was then also 2nd in the A Triple Jump breaking the 10m barrier (10.29m). Afam was 2nd in the A Shot with a huge throw (10.18m) and won the A Discus again throwing superbly (28.20m), with Toryn Austin 2nd in the B (16.06m). Toryn was also 3rd in the A Javelin (19.47m). Well done.

There were also 14 non-scorers for the 75/100m, 800m and relays. These results are posted in a separate article. Good to see you all there though, running and cheering !

Well done all. Next match is Sunday 1st June at Parliament Hill Fields which we can look forward to doing well in. Maybe even a victory ?

Read Dave Kent’s report on the club’s visit to the Lake District over the May bank holiday weekend below:

In the steps of AW and beyond …
It is widely accepted that the late Alfred Wainwright covered every Path, Dale, Fell and Peak in the English Lake District and this can be seen from his expertly illustrated Pictorial Guides. That is until one member of the annual SLH walking group covered many of the bits in between! Antonio managed to zig-zag his way around the fells, from one outcrop to another, from one side of the group to the other and from being out of sight to being in your face. There would only be one winner if he entered a sheep dog trial! He also ascended peaks that were not on the itinerary, he walked on water (picture supplied) and he performed the ultimate ‘Marcel Marceux’ moment, demonstrating how to nearly loose your balance on a stepping stone. He has no equal.

The rest of the group had a relaxing weekend in Grasmere where various B&B and hotel accommodation was inhabited and many eating and drinking establishments visited. Should you visit Grasmere by day (instead of being on the fells) it will be crowded and it will serve you right. Thankfully in the early mornings and evenings it is very quiet and peaceful. The surroundings are every bit as good as Wordsworth says. It turned out that Pam was in fact a local girl. Apparently her youthful experiences didn’t extend to the fells. She was therefore determined to make up for lost time on this occasion.

Saturday’s route started in Great Langdale, an inspiring place in itself, before ascending Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Esk Pike and Rossett Pike. Esk Hause and Angle Tarn were also visited before the main decent down Rossett Gill to Mickelden and along to the Old Dungeon Gill Hotel. A small splinter group ascended The Band to meet the group at Three Tarns before descending same. They happened to witness Sue and Clive’s rare navigation error – unintentionally ascending Bowfell twice! The walk, lead by Francis, was probably the longest serious walk attempted by both Marketa and Richard Leeves (DK’s nephew). They both passed the test and will be invited again!

Sunday allowed an easier walk to accompany the main walk as far as Ambleside. The lowland scenery around Rydal Water was stunning. The composition of every view was outstanding. Marie and Nina ventured onto Lake Windermere by boat while the rest strode up the Fairfield Horseshoe. As we got nearer to the summit we entered cloud and it became very difficult to pin-point exactly how far we had travelled. Just on queue SLH’s renowned fell runner/walker – Bernie Ingrams – miraculously appeared out of the mist to clarify our position before moving on with his group of friends. Thank you Bernie! At the summit it was very difficult to find the intended descent (refer AW Book One - Fairfield 9, for excuses) however a successful descent was achieved via Grisedale Tarn. Leslie Emery rang Peter at this point to confirm that Southampton had not been relegated. The pace quickened from here. He was even up to driving north of Keswick to see an Osprey. We all encamped in the Traveller’s Rest instead.

Monday allowed Kate and Clare to complete their studying/revision, which they had hoped to do earlier, while most ventured up Helm Crag (aka The Lion and the Lamb) as seen on the BBC Wainwright series presented by Julia Bradbury. The actual summit is further along and known as the Howitzer. It was at this point that the brave ones climbed this overhanging crag and even stood up so that they could be recorded on camera (pictures also supplied). It will be hard to beat this next year – any ideas?

SLH women’s team scored 150pts to win comfortably by 29pts. There was a full 52-seater coach ready at Coulsdon clubhouse at 10:30, and it returned full of tired athletes and supporters later that day.

Seniors

Natalie Bartley won both the 100m (12.4) and the 200m (25.6) A strings, with Estelle Didoh winning the B 100m (13.1) and Freddie Foster the B 200m (26.2). Jessica Case was 2nd in the A 400m (63.2) with Harriet Field 2nd in the B string (65.6). Georgie Bruinvels was 2nd in both the A 800m (2:30.7) and the A 1500m (5:16.3), with Amy Mitchell winning the B string 1500m with a PB (5:26.0), and Stephanie Ware 2nd in the B 800m (2:35.0). Pippa Major was 3rd in the A 3000m (11:21.0) with Viv Mitchell 2nd in the B string (12:04.6). Jessice also won the both the A Hurdles with the 100m (17.7) and the 400m (72.0). Estelle, Jessica, Freddie and Natalie won the 4×100m relay, while Jessica, Georgie, Harriet and Freddie were 2nd in the 4×400m.

In the field, we were short of jumpers, but tried hard. we had no Triple Jumpers, but Harriet was 4th in the A Long Jump (3.99m) with Estelle 3rd in the B (3.77m). In the High Jump, Amy Mitchell was 3rd in the A string (1.30m) with Harriet 3rd in the B (1.00m). We scored consistently well in the throws, as Zoe Wickens was her usual dominant self, winning the A string Javelin (34.41m) with Bonita Francis winning the B (26.17m). Bonita was 2nd in the A shot (8.97m), the A Discus (25.67m) and the B Hammer (20.68m).Team captain Jill Lula was 2nd in the A Hammer (32.36m), the B Shot (7.77m) and the B Discus (24.30m).

U15 Girls

Shanice Harrison was 2nd in both A string sprints, 100m (13.2) and 200m (27.4). Megan Waller won the B 100m in a new PB (13.5). Nana Djan fell at the line when coming 3rd in the B 200m (29.7), and injure her ankle quite badly. hope you recover quickly Nana. there was a great SLH battle in the 800m, with Maria Kavanagh 2nd in the A string with a PB (2:40.4) while Ruth Myburgh won the B string, also with a PB (2:41.4). 2 very young newcomers ran the 1500m. Tessa Billups was 3rd in the A string with a PB (5:51.5), while sister Amy was 3rd in the B string (5:57.9). Jahisha Thomas got a PB while coming 2nd in the A 75m Hurdles (12.1). The girls then ran a very close up 2nd in the relay, with Megan, Jahisha, Shanice and newcomer Vanessa La Fon. Jahisha was also 2nd in the A High Jump with a fantastic PB (1.45m) while also dashing over in between jumps to get 2nd in the A Long Jump also (4.75m). Another young newcomer, Alex Roberts was impressive coming 2nd in the B High Jump with a PB (1.20m). Yet another very young debutante, Maya Bruney, was 2nd with a PB in the B Long jump (4.07m). Tessa, Amy, Alex and Maya were all competing against girls up to 4 years older.

In the throws we had a clean sweep of bith the Shot and Javelin. Chioma Obe-Adewole won the A shot (8.33m), while sister Iyanni won the B string with a PB (6.94m). Nana Djon won the A Javelin with a PB (22.18m), with Iyanni winning the B string (10.37m). Chioma was also 2nd in the A Discus (18.51m) with Iyanni 3rd in the B string (11.41m).

SLH also had the distinction of having 13 non-scorers in the 100m, 5 in the 800m, and 9 in the Long Jump, to the disbelief of the organisers. Well done girls.

100m - Vanessa La Fon (13.6), Kalise Powell (14.4), Reshae McPherson (14.6), Maya Bruney (14.8), Jazz Crawford (14.8), Nicholette Pollard-Odle (15.3), Alex Roberts (15.7), Tessa Billups (15.9), Amy Billups (16.2), Kalema Powell (16.2), Kyra Akinnibi (16.4), Tianne Gibson-Bartlett (16.6), Emma Doyle (17.5).
