South London Harriers are a sociable as well as a successful club. Throughout the year there are social events, formal and informal, planned and spontaneous, member or committee driven.
The clubhouse bar (staffed by member volunteers) is open after training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It doesn't just serve beer, although the beer is very good. Members also usually go to and from races together and socialise after events.
SLH also has a dedicated online forum for members to keep in touch and to share news. Member-driven social initiatives are welcomed.
A Boxing Day handicap race for club members and guests is held locally in the aptly named Happy Valley. At the end of the year another club members race is held in Nork Park. There is a member-organised New Year’s Eve party each year.
There is an annual SLH Winter Party, fixed each autumn for Hallowe'en, Diwali, Christmas, New Year’s Eve or Chinese New Year or any date between October and February.
A formal dinner at the clubhouse, where cups and medals are awarded, marks the end of the cross-country season in April.
In July and December the club holds solstice pub runs.
Throughout the summer, the tri section's open water swimmers sometimes stay after their lake swim to eat and socialise.
With the Surrey Hills on our doorstep, the tri section also holds social pace bike rides for all abilities.
There are regular organised weekends away for training or particular events. These include the Man v Horse weekend in Wales in June, the Swanage weekend on the Dorset Coast in November and the Walking weekend in the Lake District in May. Members often organise trips themselves and include any SLH members who wish to join them. A recent trip was to Lanzarote training camp La Santa.
There is a Social Sub-Committee for which interested members are invited to put themselves forward. This Committee coordinates an annual calendar of fixed social events. Others happen throughout the year when members decide to share activities with others in SLH.
SLH: Friendly as well as fast.
