January 17th, 2010: Press Release : Mob Match v. Thames Hare & Hounds
Posted by Brian and Viv at 6:35 pmThe annual mob match between Thames Hare and Hounds and South London Harriers took place over an even more demanding than usual 7.5 mile course on Farthing Downs despite this week’s weather conditions.
With few races to choose from, it’s not surprising that a number guest runners joined in as well. Seven keen competitors from Herne Hill Harriers also toed the start line, along with Lauren Stewart from Woodford Green & Essex Ladies (30th in 55.21) and Matt Morgan from Striders of Croydon (8th in 48.45).
The race was won by Thames’ Simon Wurr in 46mins 13secs with the host club’s Jason Simpson second in 46.47. Herne Hill runners took the next three spots with Jeff Cunningham timing 47.11, Rob Karn, 47.25 and Keith Newton, 48.06.
Next SLH home was Matt Chapman, 9th in 49.22 with first woman, Herne Hill’s Cathy Ansell 10th in 49.40, just ahead of SLH’s Andy Collins 11th in 49.44. Other leading SLH runners were: 13th Glenn Quarton, 50.10; 15th Paul Hone, 50.26; 16th David Baker, 50.29, 17th Dan Gillett 50.38, 21st David Ogden 51.53, 22nd Mark Burtwell 52.01, and 23rd Alex Halpin 52.04. SLH’s first woman was Ruth Hutton, 35th in 56.53 with Beckie Woodland 36th in 57.52.
The Mob Match scoring was set to the first 17 from each club and on this basis SLH won the match with 263 points to Thames’ 383.
The race also incorporated SLH’s veteran’s handicap and the fine trophy presented for this winner went to Sylvie Kah who completed the course in 68.12.
