June 6th, 2009: SML - Match 3 at Bracknell
Posted by Paul at 9:03 pmA wet track and cloudy sky greeted the men’s team at Bracknell. With each of our opponents having come last in their previous match, our Team manager was in confident mood. The cancellation of the pole vault, one of our weakest two events, and the debut of Samzu in the high hurdles (our other one), added to the optimism. It soon transpired that Kingston and Poly had turned up with a select few, thwarting us in the sprints, and knocking Iwan back a place on the last throw of the hammer. Meanwhile, Eastbourne were dominating the hurdling, and Bracknell were strong in the throws and jumps.
With the sprinters both exacerbating injuries, and a no-show from the middle distance squad, we slumped to third. Calling on the non-scorers - all of whom stepped up keenly - we managed to fill some missing gaps. Strong finishes in the triple and discus, and two scratch relay teams helped us stay in contention for second. Our luck only held because Eastbourne were unfortunately disqualified in the 4 x 100 relay - a fate we have suffered in the past. But our hopes of promotion have taken a large dent.
Final scores:- Bracknell 109.5, SLH 87.5, Eastbourne 86, Kingston and Poly 32.
