Posted by Brian and Viv at 5:08 pmThe ‘Pirie’ ten mile cross country race on Farthing Downs last weekend attracted a field in excess of 100 runners. It may have been the fine sunny weather that boosted the numbers; it certainly wasn’t the ease of the course. This is a tough, hilly 10 miler and as well as being an open race incorporates the South London Harriers 10 mile cross country Championship.
Stuart Major left no doubt in the SLH Championship, being the clear winner of the event in 56 mins 52 secs and allowing him to claim back the Thornton Cup from Pawel Bal who finished 7th on this occasion in 58.47. Ben Paviour of Herne Hill was second in 57.05 and David Robinson, also of Herne Hill was third in 57.29 and also the first veteran over 40 finisher. Third in the SLH championship was David Ogden (over 40) in 61.55.
First over 50 runner to finish was Bernie Mulvany (unattached) in 65.43 and first over 60 was Geoff Newton of Tadworth AC in 68.14. Antonio Martins being the first over 50 for SLH and Clive Beauvais the first SLH over 60.
Ruth Hutton took the woman’s championship in 68.38 and was the first to receive a brand new trophy presented by Ronnie Keay for first woman. Veronique Bringlow of Epsom & Ewell was second in 71.25 and Rebecca Black of Dorking & Mole Valley third in 72.26. Second in the SLH championship was Christine Costiff in 76.43 and third Pam Iannella in 85.36.
