News from South London Harriers
November 11th, 2008: Sportshall - Match 1 26th Oct
Posted by Ian Field at 8:01 amA really good turnout in the U13 age groups for the first competition on the Sportshall calendar. Some very good individual and team results as well. The event was enjoyed by all, and the 9 SLH teams came together well with great support for each other, and also from the large crowd.
A team - 4th, B team - 13th, C team - 14th, D team - 20th, from a total of 20 teams.
Good overall result. The teams of 6 competed in the wide variety of events with great gusto and commitment. I predict even better results next time, as there were 4 athletes missing who would almost certainly have been in the A or B team, which would have a knock-on effect to all the others. The D team comprised only 2 members, and should be full up next time hopefully.
There were good overall performances from several athletes in particular. Vanessa La Fon was 9th in the top 10 individuals, after winning the 2 lap sprint. Leanne Cooper was outstanding in the vertical jump, and combined for a great Paarlauf race with Maria Kavanagh, who just lost out on the line to a very strong Herc Wim pair. Nicholette Pollard hurdled beautifully to make up lots of ground in the obstacle relay, and it was good to see Rebecca Oliver finally back from a long illness to compete well over 4 laps. Well done girls.
U13 Boys
A team - 2nd, B team - 7th, C team - 14th, from a total of 16 teams.
Superb by the A team especially. The boys all put in 100% to make this a true team performance. We seem to look shorter than all our opponents but make up for it with talent, determination and speed. Again, a full C team next time will help a lot, as they were 3 short.
Individually, Saul Thompson was outstanding in all his events, and came 5th overall, with Reece Young 7th. The relays were particularly strong with Harry Wilson, Louis Rossi-Jones and Aaron Wells really sprinting well. Simi Obe-Adewole easily won his Shot event, almost striking the measuring official who clearly wasn’t expecting such a long distance. Creston Harrison and Caleb Watson showed what talents they are despite their very young age. Creston was superb in his 2 lap, and Caleb’s relay legs were phenominal, even sparking comments from the other teams’ coaches. (No Herne Hill, you can’t have him !). The hightlight was a very competitive obstacle relay heat between the B and C teams which, luckily for the selectors, saw the B team just edge a victory. Looks good for next time. Well done boys, you showed the girls the way this time.
U15 Girls
A team - 5th out of 9
With only 3 girls, this was a uphill struggle for the team event, but there were some very good individual performances. Shanice Harrison looking unbeatable in the 2 lap sprint, and combining well with Naomi Poyser for a great Paarlauf. Chioma Obi-Adewole won the Shot, and competed in the running races for the first time, with no little speed. Shanice finished 5th overall in the individual competition.
U15 Boy
No, not a spelling mistake. Unfortunately only 1 boy in the “team”. Finn Nightingale was however, unperturbed, and finished 9th overall. Finn showed he could sprint and jump, and it looks like there could be good things to come from him, and from the team, when his teammates are present.
Well done all, and look forward the the next event on Sunday 30th November.
The Surrey selectors will be there again next time looking for their team members, so lets put it another super-human effort next time. All the 5 individuals mentioned are in contention, as well as several others who were close to the top 10’s in their age groups. Let’s get SLH represented again this year to continue our growing tradition in Sportshall.
