October 27th, 2008: Press Release: Orion Mob/Great South Run
Posted by Brian and Viv at 7:59 amEssex based Orion Harriers sent a squad of 39 runners over to Farthing Downs last Saturday to run in the first of this season’s “Mob Matches” against host club South London Harriers. SLH started the match with a few less runners and unfortunately a couple of key scorers dropped out with injury over the 7 and a half mile course, allowing Orion to go away with the trophy, despite SLH having the leading two runners home.
Stuart Major cruised round the course in 45mins 45secs with Pawel Bal second in 47.21. The next two home were Orion runners Shay Joyce and Neil McGoun. SLH then took the next three places with David Baker (48.22), David Sinclair (48.41) and Paul Hone (49.20). Andy Davis was 9th (50.30), Daniel Gillett 10th (also 50.30) and Tony Harran 11th (51.23).
First woman home was SLH’s Ruth Hutton (54.56) with Carol Evans second (55.49).
The race also incorporated the Club’s 7 and a half mile veteran’s championship and this was won by 5th placed David Baker.
Jason Simpson continued his succession of wins in taking first over 40 veteran place (25th overall) in the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth on Sunday, timing 53 minutes for the ten miles. Over 45 competitor, Chris Phelan was 2nd in his age category, 45th overall in 58.28.
