Carol Evans claimed her crown as the Surrey Veteran’s Cross Country Champion at Richmond Park on Saturday. In a hard fought race, over 45 runner Carol had the strength to win through and hold off rivals ten years younger than herself. In almost perfect conditions, if a little breezy at times, the South London women took the 35 to 44 age group team prize led home by Carol with Ruth Hutton finishing 4th in 24.47, Clare Settle 7th in 25.28, Pippa Major 9th in 25.42, Jane Papa (29.30) and Jennie Burdett (33.06).

The club’s over 45 team was 4th with Rachel Croggen (28.24),Trudi Kuhn (28.46), Pam Ianella (29.31) and Penny Jarratt (31.29).

Veteran over 60 runner Sandra Hughes finished in 33.25 and over 55 year runner Nina Pinkerton in 35.10.

In the men’s event, over 45 runner Chris Phelan was second overall and 1st in his age group with a superb 35.55. Andy Collins was 5th in 36.46, Mike Airey 15th in 39.18 giving the team second place, backed by Paul Mitchell (39.59), Alistair Morton (41.12) and Joseph Bertorelli (44.04).

In the over 50’s race, the SLH team also finished in silver medal position led home by Barry Attwell, 3rd in 38.10, Glenn Quarton 6th (38.23) and Antonio Martins 8th (39.47). Peter Emery (43.13), Matt Saunders (44.01) giving their backing.

The over 60’s team of Bob Gevers (42.07), Ken Lee (44.25) and Dave Newland (46.52) took bronze position with Dave Newland being the individual over 65 winner.

Over 70 runner, Ken Sheppard finished in 57.35, 4th in this age group.

Another veteran runner over 45, David Ogden, took a longer course to complete Sunday’s Leicester Marathon in 2hrs and 57mins.

Also on Sunday, over 40 veteran Jason Simpson finished 2nd in the Croydon 10km road race in 32.15, just 14 seconds behind the winner. David Sinclair was 5th in 34.43 and Daniel Gillett 6th in 36.05, giving them the winning team.
