Competing in the first of this season’s Surrey League Cross Country matches, SLH runners were out in strength.
The women in particular probably have one of their strongest teams ever competing in Division One.

In their match at Nork Park their first five scorers closed out within the first 25 for a decisive 68 points win with Georgie Bruinvels leading the way with her second place finish in 23.24. Michelle Jenkins was 10th in 25.48, Beckie Woodland 12th in 25.59, Gemma Marrs, 20th in 26.30 and Carol Evans 24th in 26.37.

Indeed, the club’s ‘B’ team of Ruth Hutton, Nicky Morgan, Viv Mitchell, Caroline Walker and Kate Hewett finished in a creditable 10th place.

Helen Wilson, 11th in 22.01, Ruth Myburgh, 24th in 23.12 and Francesca Parris, 33rd in 24.58 represented the under 15 girls. Amy Mitchell, 30th in 24.31 and Jenny Hewett, 35th in 24.31 took part in the under 17’s race.

The 25 runners representing SLH at Petersham in the men’s event also pulled out all the stops to finish a fine fourth, with a number of young runners coming through to perform well for the club.

Jason Simpson was first home in 16th place in 30.39, just one place ahead of Tom Jenkins who timed 30.44. Andy Tindell was 26th in 31.01, Michael McManus (junior) ran superbly for 44th place in 31.52 with Matt Grant (junior) in 48th in 32.20. Lee Morgan was 49th in 32.21 and another junior, Daniel Sellman was 51st in 32.30.

Matt Chapman was 53rd in 32.37, Dave Sinclair 62nd in 32.52 and last scorer was veteran David Ogden , 76th in 33.47.

The under 13’s were well represented in their event by Tom Holden, the race winner in 17.56, Ben Foreman, 4th in 18.32, Tom Aubertin, 5th in 18.53, Lawrence Rook, 6th in 19.06 and Tom Goldsack, 10th in 22.04, giving them the team win.

The under 15s and under 17s ran in one race. Under 17, Adam Gye was first SLH finisher in 6th in 16.38, Martin Parry (under 17) was 7th in 16.43, Ben McDaniel (under 17)  was 10th in 17.22 and under 15 Max Wheeler was 11th in 17.55.
