View the Guardian article guardian-south-london-23-july-bal-shines-in-elmore.pdf South London Harriers stage the race which starts and finishes in this local village fete. The course is a demanding one with plenty of hills and this year’s windy conditions made it even tougher. The race winner for the second time in a row was Aldershot and Farnham’s Kevin Quinn in a time of 36mins 29secs, remarkably some 2 minutes faster than his 2007 win. Second home was South London’s Pawel Bal in 39.45 and third was Wayne Smith of Stragglers.
Carl Plumpton of City of Portsmouth was fourth and first over 40 veteran in 40.02 with SLH’s Chris Phelan hot on his heels as second v40 in 40.07. Luis Gomez of Sutton Runners was next home followed by David Ogden and Phil Scarles of SLH, all of these over 40 vets in 40.35, 41.06 and 41.11 respectively and then in ninth spot and first over 50 veteran, SLH’s Ian Kitching in 41.39.
First over 60 veteran was Clive Beauvais of SLH in 46.25.
First Lady home was Meera Siva of Reigate Priory in 45.29 with SLH’s Carol Evans second in 46.47 and Rachel Coe-O’Brien, also SLH, in 47.38.
All proceeds from the race will this year go to the “Dyscover” charity based at Walton on the Hill, helping people with dysphasia.
As if a seven mile, hilly, workout wasn’t enough, a number of SLH runners then turned their attention to the Elmbridge 10km race the next day. This race forms part of the Surrey Road League.
Pawel Bal was ninth in 34.12, Andy Evans (v40) was 22nd in 35.06, David Baker (v40) was 23rd in 35.06, Chris Phelan (v40) was 28th in 35.30, Ian Kitching (v50) was 32nd in 35.51 and Paul Hone (v40) was 40th in 36.19 giving them second team place.
Becky Woodland was 6th senior woman in 109th place overall in 39.57. Ruth Hutton was second lady vet 35, 126th overall in 40.26 and Trudy Kuhn (LV45) finished in 48.36.
The third of this year’s Informal 10kms organised by the club takes place on Thursday 31st July at 7.30pm on Farthing Downs. Full details from southlondonharriers.org.
