June 11th, 2008: Young Athletes League 2 - Parliament Hill

Posted by Ian Field at 5:24 pm

A scorching hot day, and some scorching performances brought victory for SLH in the 2nd Young Athletes League match at Parliament Hill Fields on Sunday 1st June. The team amassed 488pts to 2nd placed Kingston Poly’s 458. This places us joint top of the league with 2 matches remaining.

Well done to all that competed, and apologies to the non-scorers who came along, only to find the match referee was going to cancel most of their events. Kingston, who host the next one, have assured us they will be re-instated for 22nd June at Kingsmeadow.

U13 Girls

Vanessa La Fon made up for missing the 150m by winning the 75m A string (10.2 PB) with Jazz Crawford winning the B (11.1) in her first scoring run for the club. Zoe Collins’s conversion to shorter distances continued well as she stepped in as the A 150m runner and was 4th with a very good PB (22.6). Maria Kavanagh was 2nd in the 800m A (2:39.6) with Kalise Powell winning the B string (2:40.4 PB). Amy Billups was 2nd in the A 1200m with a PB (2:25.0) with Tessa Billups 2nd in the B (4:33.7). Reshae McPherson was 2nd in the A 70m Hurdles (13.5) in her first attempt ever at the event! Vanessa La Fon won the B (16.7). In the field, Reshae was 3rd in the A High Jump (1.20m) with Alex Roberts winning the B with the same height (1.20m). Maya Bruney for once failed to dominate the Long Jump, and was 4th in the A (3.61m) with Maria 2nd in the B (3.40m). Zoe was 4th in the A Shot (4.00m) with Kalema Powell, making her first appearance as a scorer 2nd in the B (3.48m). Maya, Nicholette, Kalise and Vanessa then won the 4×100m in a very good time (57.9). An extremely good performance from the whole team.

U13 Boys

Creston Harrison ran his first scoring race for SLH with 6th in the A 100m (14.9) with Harry Wilson 3rd in the B (15.1). Saul Thompson was 2nd in the 200m (29.2) with Ollie Henke winning the B (29.5 PB). Ben Foreman was 2nd in the A 800m (2:32.2) and James Male 2nd in the B (2:52.3). Lawrence Rook was 3rd in the A 1500m (5:23.2) with Aaron Wells 2nd in the B (5:45.1). Saul then dominated the 75m Hurdles to win the A string in an exceptional PB (13.0). In the field Kyal Truong-Clarke won the A Shot (8.10m), Harry was 5th in the A Long jump (3.24m) with Aaron 3rd in the B (3.08m). Ollie recorded a superb win in the High jump (1.36m) with Saul winning the B (1.20m). Creston, Harry, Ollie and Saul were 3rd in the 4×100m relay. Good stuff lads. Keep it up.

U15 Girls

A superb clean sweep in the 100m with Shanice Harrison A (13.1) and Megan Waller B (14.1). Unfortunately Shanice was sick at the start of her favoured 200m, but Ruth Myburgh stood in with an excellent PB in the A string (29.6) for 3rd. Ruth then went on the win the A 800m (2:42,5). Sad to say, no B runner, and no-one for the 1500m either. In the 75m Hurdles Jahisha Thomas dominated, winning the A string (11.8), and Megan was 2nd in the B (14.8). In the field Jahisha A (4.95m) and Megan B (3.77m) had a clean sweep in the Long Jump. Jahisha also won the A High Jump (1.45m) with Ruth, in her first try at the event, winning the B string with a PB (1.15m). Chioma Obi-Adewole was the A string thrower with 2nd in the Discus (19.80m), 4th in the Javelin (10.98m) and 2nd in the Shot with an impressive throw (8.29m) only just beaten by a few centimetres by the Surrey champion. Sister Iyanni Obi-Adewole was the B string with 2nd in each throw. Discus (11.94m), Javelin (8.12m) and Shot (7.06m). Ruth, Megan, Jahisha and Shanice won the 4×100m relay impressively in a very good time (55.3). Points galore for the U15 girls, really well done.

U15 Boys

George Gomez was 3rd in the A 100m (12.8) with Josh Street winning the B (12.6). Josh in his first SLH scoring event, was 2nd in the A 200m (25.0), with Tyrie Obuks 2nd in the B 200m (27.5). Josh then also won the A 400m in a superb time (56.2) with perhaps a tired looking Tyrie 2nd in the B (65.4). Richard Morris had an asthma attack while going well in the A 800m and unfortunately pulled up. Adam Atkins was 2nd in the B (2:27.3). James McDonald was a strong 4th in the A 1500m (5:10.3). Richard recovered to come 3rd in the A 80m Hurdles (15.3). In the field, Adesimi Obi-Adewole won the A Discus (17.47m) and was 2nd in the A Shot (6.50m). James threw well for 2nd in the A Javelin (26.05m) with Richard 2nd in the B (18.63m). Tyrie’s day improved as he was 3rd in the A long Jump (4.33m). George was 2nd in the A High jump (1.45m). Josh, Richard, Tyrie and George were 2nd in the 4×100m relay. Good effort boys.

U17 Girls

Val Moskalenko was a close 2nd in the A 100m (14.6). Frederica Foster won the A 200m (25.9) with Harriet Field winning the B (28.1). Harriet then won the A 300m (43.6). Hannah Field was 2nd in the A 800m (2:47.7). Amy Mitchell won the A 1500m (5:26.6). Hannah, Val, Harriet and Freddie won the 4×100m in a close race edging out Kingston on the line. SLH then completed a clean sweep of all the girls relays with Harriet, Amy, Hannah and Freddie winning the 4×300m easily. In the field Amy was 2nd in the A Discus (11.93m). Harriet won the A Javelin (25.64m). Hannah was 2nd in the A Long Jump (3.95m) with Val winning the B string (3.90m). Amy was then 2nd in the A High jump (1.34m) with Hannah winning the B (1.31m PB). Good points from a willing team.

U17 Boys

Sadly our 2 top sprinters didn’t make it at the last minute. Neil Fuhrmann was 5th in the A 100m (12.7) with Afam Obi-Adewole winning the B (11.6). Neil was 4th in the A 200m (26.0) with Dylan Blake-Mills 3rd in the B (26.4). Dylan was then 3rd in the A 400m (61.9). Dominic Steiert was 3rd in the A 800m (2:09.8) with debutante Joe Miller 3rd in the B (2:30.0). The 4×100m relay team of Dylan, Neil, Richard and Afam were 4th. We were excellent in the field where Richard Humpreys was 3rd in the A Hammer (17.99m). Afam won the A Discus easily (31.72m) with Tom Bullen winning the B (31.03m). They were 12m ahead of any other athlete in this event ! Tom won the A Shot (11.84m PB) and the A Javelin (30.25m), with Richard winning the B (23.92m). Afam in the Long jump leapt an incredible distance (6.05m) only to find a Heathside athlete doing 6.34m ! While Neil won the B (5.26m). Neil was then 4th in the A Triple jump (10.45m) in a close contest. 2nd place was only 40cm further. Great stuff boys, especially the field events.

Excellent result. Let’s make sure we continue to train hard, and go to Kingsmeadow on 22nd June looking for another good result.
