June 7th, 2008: Southern Men’s League Match 2 - Report
Posted by Paul at 11:57 pmThere was an interesting mix of highs and lows in the second men’s track and field match, held on a fine afternoon at Withdean stadium. Hitting the high notes, Matt Grant and Dan Selman completed an impressive 1-2 in the 1500, with other maximums coming in the 800m, steeplechase and the triple jump. Billy Porter won his sprints and then led the first leg of the 4×4 in style. Peter Wickens won both the javelin and discus in his throwing quadrathlon, supported by Hollis’s B string win in the hammer. And Stephen Babalola broke 13 metres to out-jump the redoubtable Darren Brown in the triple.
All was not sunshine and light however. After 11 events we were equal last, missing points in the pole vault and high hurdles. Kieran had a bad day in the long jump, normally his forte, and Will unfortunately didn’t score in the javelin. And the lows don’t come much worse than the 1.10m I manged to clear for our single point in the pole vault!
But a strong finish left us comfortably in second place: Crawley 100, SLH 91.5, East Grinstead 81 and Haywards Heath and Lewes on 77.5.
Encouragingly, some good non-score results below too. If there are any more triple jump results, please let me know.
