May 8th, 2008: Young Athletes League - 4th May Kingston
Posted by Ian Field at 9:13 pmThe SLH track young Athletes gathered as a team for the first time at Kingsmeadow Stadium for the first match this season. With 7 teams competing, SLH finished 2nd, just behind the home team, Kingston.
With the threat of rain not being fulfilled, the competitors emjoyed good conditions on the day. This was held as a ‘double’ fixture, alongside another match, so at times seemed chaotic. This did, however, make for a good atmosphere, with a large crowd from 13 different clubs all supporting.
U13 Girls
Maya Bruney ran in the wrong race, but still came an excellent 2nd in the A 75m (11.2), with Vanessa La Fon winning the B 75m (10.9). Vanessa then won the 150m A string (21.0) with Zoe Collins 2nd in the B (23.3). Kalise Powell ran a PB in the A 800m (2:45.5) for 2nd place, with Sophie Foreman, recovering from illness, 3rd in the B (3:07.7). Maria Kavanagh continued her good form with a PB in the A 1200m (4:19.4) for 2nd place, with Tessa Billups winning the B string (4:33.6). Nicholette Pollard-Odle was 4th in the A 70m hurdles (14.5) with Vanessa 4th in the B string (15.4). The girls capped a good performance on the track with a win in the 4×100m relay. In the field, newcomer Reshae McPherson was 2nd in the A High Jump (1.20m) with her first ever attempt at the event. Alex Roberts again showed her jumping potential winning the b string also with the same height (1.20m). Maya easily won the Long Jump with a 3rd PB of the season in this event (4.08m) with Reshae 2nd in the B (3.20m). Zoe did well in a new event to come 3rd in the A Shot (4.29m). Well done girls.
U13 Boys
Saul Tompson had a rare 2nd place in the A 100m (14.0) but made up for it by winning the A 200m by a large margin (29.3). Laurence Rook was 2nd in the B 200m (31.2). Unfortunately the confusion of such a large match meant we missed the B runner in the 100m. A shame, as his time in the non-scoring event (15.1) would have made him 2nd in the B. Ben Foreman was 4th in the A 800m (2:42.8) with Aaron Wells 3rd in the B race (2:51.2). The 1500m was a fast race, where Laurence ran really well to come 2nd in the A string (5:16.9) with Tom Aubertin winning the B (5:21.9). Saul was back again to cruise to victory in the A 75m hurdles (13.7) and was part of the winning 4×100m relay team which rounded things off nicely. In the field, we couldn’t clear any heights with debutants in the High jump, but Louis Rossi-Jones was 2nd in the A Long Jump (3.72m) with Harry Wilson 5th in the B (2.59m). Kyal Truong-Clarke was 2nd in the A Shot with a huge throw (8.21m) with Ben Myburgh 4th in the B (3.93m). Well done boys.
U15 Girls
Shanice Harrison was 2nd in the A 100m (13.4) although given the same time as the winner, with Megan Waller 3rd in the B (14.1). Shanice the won the A 200m (27.4) with Ruth Myburgh running really well to win the B string with a PB (31.2). Ruth was then 3rd in the A 800m (2:44.4) but unfortunatel we had no B runner or anyone for the 1500m which was disappointing. Jahisha Thomas won the A 75m hurdles as usual (12.3) with newcomer Lauren King winning the B (14.0). The girls capped a great effort by winning the 4×100m relay with Lauren, Megan, Jahisha and Shanice. In the field, we had no High jumpers, but Jahisha won the A Long Jump with an excellent leap (4.84m) with Megan winning the B string (3.85m). Throwing sisters Chioma and Iyanni Obe-Adewole had a long day in the filed. Chioma, up against the Surrey champion in Shot and Discus, was 2nd in both. This despite a huge throw in the Shot (8.20m) and Discus (16.52m). she was also 3rd in the A Javelin (10.17m). Iyanni won the B Shot (6.53m), 3rd in B Discus (9.05m) and won the B Javelin (9.39m). Well done girls.
U15 Boys
George Gomez was 2nd in the A 100m (12.7) with Finn Nightingale 2nd in the B (13.3). Tyrie Obuks was 3rd in the A 200m (26.9) with Finn 2nd in the B (27.2). Tyrie then attempted the 400m for the first time, and was a creditable 3rd (63.1). In the 800m Richard Morris ran a well-paced race for 3rd in the A string (2:24.8) with Adam Atkins winning the B (2:28.3). James MacDonald ran superbly for a huge 30second PB for 2nd in the A 1500m (5:13.8). Richard was also 3rd in the A 80m hurdles with a PB (15.5). The boys finished a good 2nd in the 4×100m relay, but unfortunately could not get a 4×400m relay team together. In the field, George Gomez was excellent winning the A High jump (1.52m). Tyrie was 2nd in the Long Jump with a PB (4.66m), with Finn winning the B string (4.66m). Simi Obe-Adewole was 3rd in the A Shot (6.56m), 3rd in the A Discus (15.16m) and 4th in the B Javelin. George was also 3rd in the B Shot (5.72m). James was 4th in the A Javelin (22.16m). Good stuff boys.
U17 Girls
A team of 5 girls competed in as many events as they could and with a lot of success. Frederica Foster won the A 200m (26.1) and the A 300m (41.1). Harriet Field won the A 800m (2:28.4) and the B 300m with a PB (41.7). Amy Mitchell won the A 1500m with a PB (5:22.8). The girls also magaed to win both relays ! Hannah Field, Valentina Moskalenko, Harriet and Frederica winning the 4×100m and Harriet, Amy, Hannah and Frederica also winning the 4×300m. In the field, Hannah was 2nd in the A Shot (5.90m), with Amy 3rd in the A High Jump (1.30m) and Hannah winning the B with the same height (1.30m). Hannah was also 3rd in the A Long Jump (3.81m) with Val winning the B string (3.70m). Harriet won the A Javelin with a PB (22.50m). Excellent points from so few girls.
U17 Boys
With several missing this was tough for the older boys also. J Sharpe was 3rd in the A 100m (11.6) with Afam Obi-Adewole winning the B race (11.8). Ben Wynter was 4th in the A 200m (23.9) with Dylan Blake-Mills 2nd in the B (26.6). Sadly no runners in the 400m ! David Sidwell gave it his best shot in the A 800m for 6th place (2:37.1). Adam Guy was 2nd in the 1500m A (4:30.8) with Gregory Campbell running a PB in the B race (4:52.0). We had no hurdlers or steeplechase, but won the 4×100m relay right on the line ! Unfortunately no 4×400m this time. In the field J Sharpe was 2nd in the A Long Jump with an excellent leap (5.74m) with Neil Fuhrmann 2nd in the B (4.97m). Neil was then also 2nd in the A Triple Jump breaking the 10m barrier (10.29m). Afam was 2nd in the A Shot with a huge throw (10.18m) and won the A Discus again throwing superbly (28.20m), with Toryn Austin 2nd in the B (16.06m). Toryn was also 3rd in the A Javelin (19.47m). Well done.
There were also 14 non-scorers for the 75/100m, 800m and relays. These results are posted in a separate article. Good to see you all there though, running and cheering !
Well done all. Next match is Sunday 1st June at Parliament Hill Fields which we can look forward to doing well in. Maybe even a victory ?
