Posted by Brian and Viv at 11:15 amSouth London Harriers’ men’s track and field season made the best of starts in the Southern League Match 1 at Tooting Bec Track last Saturday, with the SLH team winning their first match in quite some time.
SLH team manager Phil Hartnett fielded a strong team who scored a mighty 103 points. Host club, Herne Hill Harriers, were second with 84, just ahead of Serpentine AC on 82 and Medway and Maidstone Harriers on 75.
A good mix of seasoned campaigners and up-and-coming youngsters meant SLH were competitive in most areas.
Of note were 2nd places in ‘A’ string events for Billy Porter (200m), Ben McDaniel (400m), Tom Hart (800m) and verteran Ray Marriott (1500m). Andy Tindall won the ‘A’ 3000m and was 2nd in the ‘A’ 400 Hurdles.
SLH teams won both the 100m and 400m Relays.
Darren Brown was 1st in the ‘A’ Long Jump and 2nd in the ‘A’ High and Triple Jumps, and Peter Wickens was SLH’s highest scorer of the day with wins in both the ‘A’ Javelin and Discus.
Anyone wanting to try out their fitness, the May running of South London Harriers’ popular summer evening ‘Near-as-Dammit’ 10k races takes place 7.30 on the evening of Thursday 29 May 2008. For further details check the website at www.southlondonharriers.org
