South London Harriers hosted their annual schools races on Farthing Downs last Saturday. The two primary schools races held in the morning had over 160 finishers from 9 local schools and the 3 older age groups running in the afternoon had over 100 runners, some local, and some as far a field as Sussex.
The boys’ primary schools’ race was won by the team from St. Aidans School. Oscar Borg, Michael Rogan, Ryan Barrett and Charlie Devlin making up the team. Keston School was second with a team consisting of Andrew Statter, Cameron Montgomery, Jack Bancroft and Regan Beck. Coulsdon Church of England School was third, their team being Thomas Harrington (also SLH), Daniel Harrington (SLH), Robert Durling and Anthony Hughes. The overall race winner was Laurence Rook, an S.L.H. runner, who was representing Whyteleafe School. Other competitors representing their schools but who are also SLH members were Ryan Barrett, St, Aidans (8th), Daniel Harrington, Coulsdon C. of E.  (11th), Alex Chung, Margaret Roper (21st), Andrew Aubertin, Coulsdon C. of E.  (37th) and Tiernan Quantrill (74th).

In the girls’ primary race, Park Hill School took the honours with Monique Jackson, Alice Jennings, Kerry Straghan and Alice Weston Lewis making up the team. St. Davids was second with Georgia Holden, Emily Jones, Lizzie Lloyd and Victoria Clark. Attwood School was third, their team being Jemma Upton, Bethany Livermore, Emily Barnes and Jessica Barnes. Twins, Tessa and Amy Billup from Audley School were first and second finishers and also represented SLH, as did the next four finishers, Maddison Floyd (Whyteleafe School), Alex Roberts (Ridgeway), Lisa Toda and Bronte Rowlands (Essendene Lodge). Amy Ayres from SLH was 11th, Leanne Cooper was 18th representing Keston School and Eleanor Honey, running for Coulsdon C.of. E. School was 36th.

In the afternoon, three races were held for under 14, under 16 and over 16 age groups. The under 14 team race was won by John Fisher School with Connor Murphy the overall race winner, Harry Williams (8th), Harry Howes (11th) and Ben Hodge (13th). Ben Foreman from Caterham School (and SLH) was 9th, Adam Atkins also from Caterham School (and SLH) was 16th and Elliott Watts represented John Fisher (also SLH). Only one girl ran in this race, Zoe Collins from South London Harriers, finishing 33rd.

In the Under 16’s race Oxted School were the winners. Their team being Jack Bourne, Charlie Corbett, Sandy Kenny and Sam Knight with Judd School second and Caterham third. Sam Wade of Ardingly College won the race.

In the older age group (over 16), Judd School were again the victors with Josh Howkins, Edwin Clifford-Coupe, J. Bridgwater Court and Richard Gordon. Lancing College was second. Overall race winner was SLH’s Michael McManus and there were two female competitors, Georgina Nightingale and Alice Lyle.

On Sunday, South London Harriers was well represented in the Reading Half Marathon, a very popular pre-London Marathon event with over 11,000 entrants.

Jason Simpson was 10th and 1st over 40 veteran runner in a superb time of 67 mins 47 secs. Natalie Harvey was 3rd woman finisher and 37th overall in 72mins 26 secs. Caroline Walker finished in 590th place in 89 mins and over 65 veteran William Clark was 6,323rd finisher in 2hrs 6mins with over 55 veteran John Borasinki just behind in 2hrs 8mins.
