Posted by Brian and Viv at 9:13 pmThe final match of the Surrey Cross Country League Division One was held at a gloriously sunny Richmond Park last Saturday. The senior men were in some danger of relegation to Division Two if they didn’t pull out all the stops in this match and to this end a large and impressive team gathered with performances to match, giving them a fourth place finish on the day and sixth place in the overall league placings, well clear of the relegation zone.
Jason Simpson, not normally known for his cross country appearances, did the club proud with a 4th place finish in 29.04 for the 5.5 mile course. He was supported by another superb run from Tom Jenkins (12th in 29.53), Francis Staunton (31st in 30.56), another remarkable run from Ray Marriott (37th in 31.09), Pawel Bal (45th in 31.39), Chris Phelan (46th in 31.46), Michael McManus (Junior) (60th in 32.41), Matt Chapman (63rd in 32.48), David Ogden (66th) in 32.53), Andy Evans (73rd in 33.25).
The Senior Women’s Team finished in second position on the day and ended the season with a fourth placing. Again there were some impressive performances with Michelle Jenkins SLH’s first finisher in 6th place in 21.38 for the 6km course and Pippa Major just behind in 9th (22.09). Ruth Hutton was 20th (23.07) and Caroline Walker 23rd (23.19). Lisa Thompson finished the scoring five in 33rd place (24.08).
In the races for the younger club members, the under 13 girls finished 3rd team for the match, giving them a 2nd place finish for the season. Maria Kavanah was home first (5th in 13.38), Ruth Myburgh (11th in 14.07), Tessa Billup (23rd in 15.16), and Amy Billup (24th in 15.20). The under 15’s had Abi Fever finishing 16th in 21.41 and Lauren Barnett 20th in 22.30, giving SLH the 4th team overall result for that age group.
The Under 13 boys were represented by Ben Foreman who finished 6th in 19.02 and Tom Holden, 8th in 21.22 to finish in 4th spot overall for the season.
In the Under 15 /17 boys race, Ben McDaniel was 6th in 17.45, Gregory Campbell 9th In 18.08 and David Sidwell 14th In 19.49, giving SLH second finishing place for the season.
