Research from Brunel University suggests that when relating music as a motivational instrument during exercise, and not just as a distraction, tempo is one of the most important elements.

A great deal of dance and rock music has a tempo of between 120 and 140 beats per minute (bpm). For steady running routines this beat can equal that of most runners. However, if the decision is to push the effort to a higher training quality workout or even an endurance based race then your music choice should have a higher beat. Dancing Queen by ABBA has, I am told, a beat between 150 and 160 bpm.

It is reported that Gebreselassie often asked for the technosong ‘Scatman’ which has a beat of around 135 bpm to be played over the sound system during his races.

Have a look at Self.com and OnFitnessmagazine.com and happy listening.
