News from South London Harriers
January 31st, 2008: Press Release : Southern Championship
Posted by Brian and Viv at 7:49 amSouth London Harriers’ senior ladies had yet another good outing last Saturday in the South of England Cross Country Championships held at an exceptionally muddy Parliament Hill Fields. Following on from their recent wins in the County Cross Country Championships and their last Surrey League match, it was fitting they should be the first Surrey Team to finish in this competition.
Michelle Jenkins was the club’s first scorer in 35th place in 36.32. The ever dependable Pippa Major was 65th in 38.00 with Beckie Woodland timing 38.39 for 74th place. Ruth Hutton ran 39.00 for 84th to bring the scoring A team home 8th of the 47 teams taking part. Viv Mitchell was 153rd (43.03), Pam Ianella 202nd (45.27), Zoe Simek 232nd (47.14), Lorraine Hewett 264th (50.26), Sue Bottle 277th (51.36), Jennie Burdett 284th (52.06) and Jo Farrer 312th (57.29).
The senior men’s six to score team was lead home by Francis Staunton in 150th place in 56.34, Jim Burdett was 194th in 57.51, Mark Burtwell was 278th in 60.47, David Baker 330th in 62.20, Paul Mitchell 340th in 62.47 and Clive Edgington 465th in 66.01, giving the team 32nd spot of the 86 competing. Unfortunately Andy Collins, who would have finished as SLH’s second scorer wasn’t recorded in the results, so his efforts didn’t count! Colin Young, Francis Upcott and Antonio Martins also put in creditable performances to finish 493rd, 507th and 512th respectively.
Only a handful of young athletes from SLH took part on Saturday, their main focus being the National Championships next month. Those that ran, however, posted some useful performances with Maria Kavanagh 69th in the under 13 girls race with Amy Billup 160th and Tessa Billup 181st. In the under 13 boys’ Ben Foreman was 121st and James Male 174th. Amy Mitchell was the sole representative of SLH in the under 15 girls, finishing in 100th spot.
