News from South London Harriers
January 15th, 2008: Press Release : Surrey League 12 Jan. 2008
Posted by Brian and Viv at 5:35 pmSouth London Harriers’ women built on last week’s win in the County Championships with another superb win at Reigate Priory in their Division One match of the Surrey Cross Country League. Run on one of the most beautiful sunny days, conditions would have been perfect for the 3.65m course but for the heavy mud underfoot (partly due to the continued renovation of the park).
Michelle Jenkins was first finisher in 8th place, covering the distance in 24.42 with Pippa Major in 14th (25.16). Ruth Hutton was 17th (25.35) and Emily Bright 20th (25.46). Beckie Woodland completed the scoring A team in 24th place (25.56). A further eleven SLH women ran, making up full B and C teams and showing the depth the Club has at these strongly competitive events.
The senior men race a 5 mile course and SLH’s team, although putting up a determined challenge against the strong opposition, were only able to raise their game one place from the last match to finish sixth on this occasion. The 15th place finish of Andy Tindall helped (28.55) with Francis Staunton 35th (30.19). Andy Collins was 55th (31.23) and Glenn Quarton 31.24 hot on his heels in next place. Michael McManus (Under 20 runner) finished 67th (31.36), David Ogden was 78th (32.10), Phil Scarles 80th (32.19), Andy Evans 85th (32.45) and Dan Gillett finished the ten to score team in 87th place (32.52). A further seven SLH runners took part. The senior men’s team will have to pull out all the stops in their fourth and final match of the season if they are to stay in Division One.
The Under 17 Youths maintained their high standard, finishing second, with Daniel Sellman the overall race winner in 13.59. Tom Hart was 8th in 15.35 and Ben McDaniel 9th in 16.15. Chris Murphy was 13th in 16.44 and Gregory Campbell 14th in 16.51. The team retain their second position in the overall standings.
The Under 15 girls also retained second spot with Helen Wilson 10th in 18.09, Amy Mitchell 11th in 18.32, Catherine Campbell 22nd in 21.33 and Abi Feaver 23rd in 21.40.
SLH’s strong Under 13 girls team of Sophie Foreman (6th in 13.17), Maria Kavanah (8th in 13.25), Ruth Myburgh (11th in 13.45) and Eleanor Walker (42nd in 17.00) also retained their second placing in this match and overall for the season so far.
The fourth and final match of the Surrey League series takes place on 9th February at Richmond Park.
