South London Harriers had teams in every age group at the Surrey Cross Country Championships at Lloyd Park on Saturday. The races took place in cold, windy conditions with plenty of mud underfoot.

The senior women were the most successful team, again showing their great strength in depth by winning their 8km event. Pippa Major finished in 8th place in 35.45, Ruth Hutton, 14th in 36.34, Michelle Jenkins, 15th in 36.36 and Emily Bright, 16th in 36.43. Beckie Woodland, Ciara Williams, Viv Mitchell and Clare Settle, although competing as the ‘B’ team, still managed a very respectable fourth.

In the under 17 women’s race over 4.8km, Loulou Rowlands took individual silver, storming around the course in 20.01. Unfortunately Georgie Bruinvels, the club’s great hope in the under 20 women’s race was unable to finish due to illness.
The under 15 girls had a strong team of Helen Wilson (18.47), Amy Mitchell (19.14), Harriet Field (19.49) and Hannah Field ((24.01) for their 4km course, finishing in bronze medal position against the very strong opposition of Aldershot, Farnham and District and Herne Hill Harriers.

The under 13 girls, again against strong competition, finished fifth over 3.25km with Sophie Foreman (14.36), Maria Kavanagh (15.20), Tabitha Adams (15.22) and Ruth Myburgh (15.34) comprising the scoring team.

The senior men’s team of six to score over 12km was led home by a very much in form over 50 veteran Ray Marriott in 21st place in 47.42, setting the pattern for the older club members to show the youngsters how it’s done. Barry Attwell, another over 50) was next home in 49.30, followed by yet another over 50, Glenn Quarton in 49.57. The next three scorers were all over 40 veterans: David Ogden, 40th in 50.20, Andy Collins, 42nd in 50.36 and Andy Evans in 52.24. This team finished fifth.

The under 17 men needed no example, producing a strong performance, finishing in silver medal position with Daniel Sellman taking individual bronze over 6.5km (23.44). Dominic Steiert was 7th in 25.32, Jack Bourne, 8th in 25.34 and Tom Hart 18th in 27.03.
