The Surrey XC Champs (7.8m), with 151 finishers significantly fewer than last years 186, were held on what started almost like a mild sunny spring day in the morning but by noon it had clouded over and the wind had become quite strong from the south west with temperatures never much above 6C.
It had been raining hard overnight and was expecting quite a muddy course. In the event it was nowhere near as muddy as last year which is borne out by the improved finishing times. The worst section was the top of the ridge going back towards the start.
After his win in the South of Thames 7.5 champs just before Christmas Phil Wicks won easily again some two and a half minutes before his rivals in 41.20 (a mere 26 secs faster than last year) – he passed me when I had just got half way……. It did seem another 5 minutes before Will Clark passed me – all in all only 15 lapped me which is considerable better
then in previous races at Lloyd park.
As Dave Baker our captain mentioned it was our V50’s which managed to get home for our first three places!
