South London Harriers’ traditional festive challenge to anyone able to run their 2½ mile Boxing Day Handicap race at Happy Valley, Coulsdon attracted 56 hardy competitors to brave the slippery conditions.

The winner of the handicapped race was a ‘guest’ runner, Mike Milton, with a finish time of 22.51. The next four were all very senior citizens of SLH who must have plied the race ‘handicapper’ with a few drinks for favourable start times. Ian Lymath (MV60) was 2nd in the race with a finish time of 19.01 and as the first SLH finisher was awarded the coveted Iszatt Cup. Dave Grant (MV60) was 3rd in 23.07, Ken Sheppard (MV70) was 4th and Terry Ward (MV60) was 5th in 23.57. Alex Halpin (SLH) was 6th in 24.08; ‘guest’ runner Steve Wilson was 7th in 24.14; Harriet Field (SLH U17) was 8th overall and 1st woman finisher in 24.28; Andy Evans was 9th in 24.46; the mother and daughter team of Katie and Jenny Hewett were 10th and 11th both in 24.52 and in 12th place was Hannah Field (Harriet’s twin) in 24.55 and their father, Ian, was 13th in 24.56.

Luke Caldwell (a ‘guest’) ran the ‘actual’ fastest time of the day: 11.44; Daniel Selman’s 12.03 was the 2nd fastest and Michael McManus’s 12.24 was the 3rd. Georgie Bruinvels’ 12.44 ran the fastest woman’s time; Pippa Major’s 14.02 was 2nd and Christina Meyer’s  15.01 was 3rd.
