December 11th, 2007: Press Release : Ranelagh Mob Match

Posted by Brian and Viv at 12:30 pm

Last Saturday, while the rest of the country was thinking about Ricky Hatton taking on Floyd Mayweather, South London Harriers combated their own “weather” at Coulsdon’s Farthing Downs!

It was the club’s annual 7½ mile cross-country Mob Match against Ranelagh Harriers, and this year it was run in appalling conditions - strong winds and driving rain and very slippery underfoot.

SLH’s man on form, Pawel Bal, challenged strongly for lead, but had to concede to Ranelagh’s Peter Haarer, who went on to win the race in 48.20 with club-mate Duncan Bell 2nd in 48.26. Pawel was a worthy 3rd in 49.02, and added the SLH 7½ mile Championship title to the 10 mile title he won the previous Saturday. Jim Burdett was 4th in 49.20 and silver medal winner in the SLH Championship, while the bronze medal was won by Barry Attwell (6th overall in 51.52).  9th placed David Ogden was next in for SLH in a time of 53.45, Phil Scarles was 11th in 54.00, Andy Davis 12th in 54.19, Paul Mitchell 13th in 54.44, Mark Burtwell 14th in 55.26 and Colin Moyer 16th in 56.28.

SLH’s Ruth Hutton (17th overall in 56.32) was first of 11 women competing and winner of the Women’s 7½ mile Championship title. Becky Woodland (23rd overall in 58.06) was 2nd woman and winner of SLH’s Championship silver medal, with Pippa Major was 3rd woman (29th overall in 59.58) for the bronze medal.

35 SLH and 22 Ranelagh wet and muddy runners finished the race. The home side’s numeric superiority steadily paid off to give them decisive victory with 278 points to Ranelagh’s 451.
