Posted by Brian and Viv at 12:18 pmLast Saturday Pawel Bal won the South London Harriers 10 mile cross country championship for the second year, but this time finishing in 58.25, an improvement of 50 seconds on last year’s result. Ruth Hutton took the women’s title, finishing in 28th place overall in 68.09.
The SLH championship competition was run in conjunction with the club’s Open Ten Mile race held on Farthing Downs and named “The Pirie 10” after one of the club’s most famous runners of the past, Gordon Pirie.
The overall race winner was Chris Beecham of Highgate Harriers who was just thirteen seconds ahead of Pawel, after a three-way battle for most of the course along with Ian Yates of Herne Hill Harriers who eventually dropped back to third in 59.18. Second to finish for SLH, in fourth place, was Francis Staunton in 59.42. In fifth place, and the first veteran runner over 50, was Glenn Quarton in 60.34. David Ogden was first SLH over 40 vet in 64.17 for 16th place. Tadworth AC’s Geoff Newton took the first over 60 vet place in 23rd place overall in 66.42 with the Club’s championship for the first over 60 runner going to Dave Newland in 74.40 (59th).
Second woman overall (and second in the SLH’s women’s championship) was Pippa Major in 69.39 with Blackheath’s Jane Bradshaw taking third in 71.08. SLH’s Jo Quantrill, an over 50 vet, was next woman finisher in 72.51.
One hundred and thirteen competitors finished the demanding, muddy undulating course in bright but cold windy conditions.
Earlier that morning SLH organised a race for primary school children. The event was run over a one mile playing field course at Woodcote School, Coulsdon. The race was won by the Coulsdon Church of England School’s team that comprised Jemma Offley, Sophia Massay, Eleanor Honey, Thomas Harrington, Daniel Harrington and Robbie Durling. The individual girls’ winners were Alex Roberts from Ridgeway, Jemma Offley from Coulsdon CofE and Rebecca Oliver from Smitham. The boys’ winners were Thomas Harrington from Coulsdon CofE, Laurence Rook from Whyteleafe and Daniel Harrington from Coulsdon CofE.
