News from South London Harriers
December 2nd, 2007: Young Athletes - Sportshall (2)
Posted by Ian Field at 10:15 pmA good turn out once again. SLH came armed with 36 keen and able Young Athletes to take on the best that the Surrey clubs could offer. We looked great, as the new shirts were all in, and the results were slightly better on the whole, than in the first round. All seemed to enjoy themselves, with some very good individual achievements amongst them.
Once again we were able to field 2 teams here. The A team again finished 3rd, although much closer to 2nd this time. The B team 10th from 13 teams in total.
Tyrie Obuks again starred in the A team, and finished 5th overall with 49pts. Finn Nightingale would almost certainly have joined him in the top ten, but unfortunately missed an event, and finished with 36pts. Ollie Henke also ran brilliantly in the 4 lap, and Ben Foreman (37pts) and Saul Thompson (36.5pts) performed very well overall, and both have more years in this age group ! Aaron Wells also recorded a very good time in the longer 6-lap race, and helped the Obstacle Relay team to 3rd place. A superb victory in the 4×2-lap relay was another highlight.
The B team, containing some of our younger athletes, were unfortunately one person short. Creston Harrison and Reece Young ran extremely well in the 4-lap, and first timer, Nathaniel Campbell scored 37pts overall. Alex Foster showed great promise, and a superb attitude in the 2-lap and the relay, although he didn’t much enjoy the Shot. Mitchell Scott once again showed that he will move on to bigger and better things over the coming years, with a gutsy performance showing a great attitude. Well done boys.
U13 Girls
The girls teams all improved from last time. The A team finished 5th (8th last time), with the B team 11th (13th) and the C team 15th (16th) out of the 17 teams. There was also not one complaint from any athlete about their events, showing great team spirit and willingness to go out there and try their best.
The A team was lead by Jahisha Thomas (58.5pts). She would have scored even higher if she had known about the new 7 jump rule in the High jump. Finishing on 1.20m when she can clear 1.40m, she would surely have won that event. Vanessa La Fon (56pts) sprinted superbly to record the 4th fastest time in the 2-lap, and helped the relay team to 3rd place. Debutante Kalise Powell (45pts) performed very well overall, and Megan Waller sprinted well in the relays in particular, where we scored highly. Zoe Collins was unfortunate to draw the fastest heat by far, in the 6-lap race. Her determination enabled her to be pulled along to a very fast time. Leanne Cooper performed very well overall, especially in the Parrlauf, where the team came 3rd.
The B team, captained by Maya Bruney (35.5pts) did better than last time. Maya sprinted very well, and took her turn at Shot (not a team favourite). Tessa Billups (43pts) ran a reall fast 6-lap race, showing intelligence and a racing brain to pace it very well. Nicholette Pollard-Odle ran well, and would surely have scored over 40pts, but unfortunately went in the wrong race. She managed a very good Shot, and did well in the relays. Debutante Megan Nightingale showed much promise for her very tender age, and was really good in the Obstacle Relay. Rebecca Oliver and Amy Billups also competed very well overall. Well done girls.
The young C team, finished higher than last time. Alex Roberts, shouted on very enthusiastically by mum, was brilliant in her first ever High jump. She finished with an amazing 41pts overall after a good 6-lap race. Anna Jones (27pts) sprinted superbly in the 2-lap and in the relays. Bronte Rowlands, Amy Ayers, Emma Oliver and Lydia Henke also competed well, and all have time in their hands in this age group. These 4 did particularly well in the finale, the Obstacle Relay. Well done, and look forward to seeing you all at the next one.
U15 Girls
Having won round 1, and also having won all three rounds last season, the expectation weighed heavily on the senior team, who could only manage 4th place this time. There were a couple of absentees, and one team member recovering from a broken ankle. Sophie Small (79pts) finished 2nd overall, winning both the 2-lap and Vertical Jump. In what has become the “norm” now, she ran a superb last leg in the relay to come from several metres down, into 1st place, just edging out Herne Hill. Shanice Harrison (59pts) was 3rd in the 2-lap, and ran well in the relay to give SLH the lead. Janet Foskett changed events this time, and performed really well overall. Jenny Hewett also ran a superb relay leg, as well as scoring well overall. Naomi Poyser (50pts) paced her 4-lap really well to come 3rd. Hannah Field, recovering from injury, was all prepared to be a non-scorer, but was pushed into the team due to a late withdrawal. She did her bit, and performed as well as could be expected in the Shot and Vertical Jump. She’ll be back next time !
There is the 3rd round to come on January 13th. Hope to see you all there. Have a good xmas and new year, and come back refreshed and ready to train hard. If you find the time over the school hols, try practising a few of the field events. Get your mum, dad, sister or brother to measure for you and try the Vertical or Long jump. You could also practise your sprinting by racing them over the park ! You may surprise yourselves, and so might they !
Bye for now,
Ian Field
