CHRIS BEECHAM, 38, who works for a legal publisher, won a closely fought race at Farthing Down reports Alastair Aitken.

After a mile a group of eight led by Daniel Gillett went down into Happy Valley. At four miles Pawel Bal, Iain Yates and Chris Beecham were running together at the front of the field with Francis Staunton, running on his own in fourth place.

It was on a downward stretch at the seven mile point Beecham quickly opened up a lead over Bal and Yates which he held to the finish.

Beecham, who still holds the record in the Boxhill fell race that he achieved in 1997, found little difficulty tackling the tough two lap course at Coulsdon and was pleased to have his first outright victory for sometime.

BAl was winning the South London Harriers Championships for the second year, incorporated within the event, and Yates won the Herne Hill 10 miles club Championship that was first won by Joe Deakin, the 1908 Olympic Champion in 1904.
