In their first mob match of the season against Orion Harriers at Epping Forest on Saturday, a brave cluster of 19 SLH runners showed grit and determination against the home club’s large numbers as well as the tough conditions of the 7 ½ mile course, but were unfortunately to lose out to Orion overall.

There were however some very positive results from the SLH squad with David Baker finishing third (49.54), Jim Burdett fourth (49.57), Paul Mitchell eighth (52.25), Phil Scarles eleventh (53.09), Mark Burtwell thirteenth (53.45), Martin Wood sixteenth (54.44) and Nick Lee eighteenth (55.13). Ruth Hutton was first woman in 56.06 (21st overall) and Becky Woodland third woman (58.10). Colin Young (56.52), Colin Moyer (56.12), Peter Emery (60.17), E Backes (61.44), Nigel Costiff (64.18), Peter Smallbone (66.13), Pam Ianella (69.00), Jake Clausen (70.17), Jo Lingwood (77.03) and Richard Oliver (77.50) all competed well in the very boggy and hilly conditions.

Young Athletes from SLH competed at Rugby in the Schools Inter-County Cross Country with very good results. Loulou Rowlands finishing second, Maria Kavanagh twelth and Helen Wilson sixteenth.

Ray Marriott was second (first vet 50 finisher)  in the Vets AC 5.8m cross country race at Wimbledon Common, just one second behind the winner, in 32.14, with Glen Morgan (vet 45) third in 36.15. Jo Quantrill (lady vet 50) was first woman finisher in this race in 40.55. Andy Davidson was tenth in 41.30 and Graham Bradbury the first over 60 vet finisher in 42.18.

Tomorrow, 1st December, South London Harriers host their annual “Pirie” 10 mile cross country event on Farthing Downs starting at 2pm. Entries will be available on the day from the clubhouse in Brighton Road, Coulsdon.
