South London Harrier’s Women’s Team dominated last Saturday’s South of the Thames Cross Country Championships run at Richmond Park, and were rewarded with individual silver and bronze medals and team gold.

The 5½ mile race was won by Karrie Blake of Portsmouth AC in 35.19, followed by 2nd placed Pippa Major in 35.55 and 5 seconds later by 3rd placed Gemma Marrs, then Ruth Hutton in 4th place in 36.18, and to complete SLH’s winning team, Becky Woodland, 10th in 39.02.

In addition, sterling support was provided by Pam Ianella (22nd in 43.31), Jo Lingwood (32nd in 45.33), Lorraine Hewett (38th in 47.07), Zoe Simek (40th in 47.25), Jeanette Leigh (44th in 51.29) and Jo Farrar (45th in 54.47).

The SLH men fielded a side with none of the usual front runners and the team of Clive Edgington (68th in 35.20), John Quaintance (74th in 35.46), Alistair Morton (88th 36.57), Ken Lee (105th in 39.41) and Nigel Costiff (116th in 41.22) were 18th out of the 25 teams competing.

Three other SLH runners travelled to Lancing College, Sussex to take part in one of the club’s oldest annual fixtures, and although lacking in numbers SLH featured strongly with Barry Attwell winning the 5 mile race in 35.01 beating clubmate David Baker to 2nd by only one second and with Paul Mitchell 4th in 37.16.

South London Harriers are at their home on Farthing Downs, Coulsdon on Saturday 1 December for their demanding Pirie 10 mile Cross Country race. This event is open to any non-members who want to take part. Full entry details are on www.southlondonharriers.org
