November 10th, 2007: Surrey League Cross Country Fixture 2 - Ladies Report
Posted by Chris Phelan at 6:29 pmRead Jake’s report on the second Ladies fixture below: We could not have asked for a better day – dry, slightly overcast, not too cold, not too hot, not too much wind, and ……… the sun came out later for a glorious picnic (I was going to say like summer – but it rains then …… )
There was only one challenge on this course which was much alike a “green pancake” – the stream at the far end – I had visualised a clear streaming “beck” in an open space – but on the Ranelagh pictures it shows a very
narrow space between stepping stones and bushes – not really a lot of difference to the narrow bridge we had at Esher!
Just wonder what else our ladies will have to put up with in the last two matches?
The 2nd Ladies Surrey League match was extremely interesting! From the results it would appear that like us the other clubs have also been difficulties to get their runners out…………and any club not having the depth starts to struggle……………
THH does seem to have had that problem in match 1 or they were quite effective in getting their top scorers out, but Naomi Warner was still missing - so Alice Braham won in 19.57, followed fairly closely by 2 Lucy Hasell 20.08, & 7 Bethan Hopewell 21.23 their last two scorers 25 & 37 were a little further along producing a team total of 72 which was
sufficient to win the match. And jump from 10th overall to third!
Belgrave did not even have a complete team and according my calcs scored 332 points finishing 7th in the table with 425 immediately behind us. Reigate had a similar fate where Annette Morris scored in the A team (332) and are now 9th. Dulwich and Epsom had similar experiences and went into free fall (did they learn that from bad times in the stock exchange?)
Two other teams took full advantage of the depleted ranks of the other clubs, Ranelagh 84 points in match and now overall leader on 163, and HHH 79 points in match and now second on 195.
We had a serious depleted team but this slanted slightly more towards the faster end which produced a very respectable score of 133. An tremendous run by Pippa, who is now settled with forward with the top scorers in the league and was only just pipped by Clare Pauzers (who was well behind Pippa in Reigate). Ruth with another excellent run was only just behind Pippa. Our very dependable Viv produced yet again another excellent run and this managed to stay just in front of our only SL Beckie who is just getting better and better. Caroline seems to playing cat and mouse games every time, you see here passing in the first lap at a reasonable distance behind her team mates but I seem to miss her every time at the
finish because she is always just behind them and I had not expected her yet!
Maybe this she is a bit like Chris Phelan – just quietly getting on with things – like the NY marathon ‘Only 8 places behind Paula’!
Our B & C teams, although missing Alison due to Andy’s road traffic accident - At Reigate I had lost the plot in what position the other clubs were whilst trying to time all our five teams. And therefor was only aware just before the finish that Georgie were chased closely by what had to be the team in second place. When Andy Collins realised this was the situation he ran along with Georgie to encourage her and it was remarkable that suddenly the distance to the Horsham Blue Star lady behind increased by 10 to 15m! We all wish Andy all the very best. - did an excellent job in adding extra points to Belgrave, Reigate and Dulwich. So an extra 5 runners taking part would have piled another five points onto these teams points! Points which might just make the difference in the final results!
Speculating on the Reigate result Georgie would have been 3rd, Loulou 12th, Gemma 16th, Pippa 17th, Michelle 21st, Ruth 22nd…………… score for A team 69! How much longer do we need to dream? ….. Rachel 28, Lisa30, Viv 31, Beckie 32 a score of 143, but what is far more important it will take points off the other A teams!
There is never any harm in dreaming, but reality would be even greater!
