November 3rd, 2007: Young Athletes - Sportshall
Posted by Ian Field at 3:11 pmAn afternoon of indoor athletics was enjoyed by many of SLH’s U13 and U15 athletes. Results were good, although not quite up to our huge success of last season. This was probably due to a large number of absentees due to half-term activities. There were however a lot of debut performances which bode well for the other upcoming events. As usual the atmosphere was fantastic, and the athletes all seemed to really enjoy it. With 6 to a team, it means we had 36 athletes there !
SLH entered 6 teams into the first of the trio of Sportshall competitions for this winter. There were 3 U13 Girls teams, 2 U13 Boys teams and and U15 Girls team.
U13 Boys
Very well done to both teams that competed in this age group. The A team did really well to be placed 3rd of the 12 teams. The B team were a very creditable 10th, and were in fact the best placed B team. An excellent performance as they only had 5 athletes, well done Boys.
With 2 athletes from each team in each individual event, it meant 24 athletes, and therefore a maximum of 24pts available. Tyrie Obuks was outstanding as our top scorer, and came 3rd overall individually with 47 out of a possible 48 pts from his 2 events. There was also excellent support from Saul Thompson who was 4th in the 2-lap (33pts) and Reece Young strong overall (34pts). A nervous Aaron Wells overcame that, and combined with Tyrie for a brilliant win in the Paarlauf. Aaron also ran well in the 6-lap race to record a very good time. Louis Rosse-Jones and Will Flook ran well and also helped the Obstacle Relay team to an exciting 3rd position. There are possibly more points to be had from the field events, which I hope we will practice before the next meeting.
The B team included some of our youngest competitors. Creston Harrison was simply outstanding, scoring an incredible 37.5pts ! This included a 4th place in the 6-lap, an event he was very nervous of at the start. Mitchell Scott, Roje Grant and Alex Chung gave their all against much bigger opposition on their debut. Mitchell and Creston were looking really good in the Paarlauf until an unfortunate misunderstanding on the handover. Debutant Caleb Watson, looked superb in the relays, particularly over the obstacles. These guys gained good experience here, and look capable of performing even better next time. Well done lads.
U13 Girls
We had 3 teams in this age group.with a mixture of experience and extreme youth ! The A team finished 8th from 17 teams, with the B team 13th and the C team 16th. With half-term absentees, and a shortage of 4-lap and 6-lap runners, it meant several Girls filling in with events longer than they would normally do, so well done to all those who willingly helped out.
There were 34 athletes, and therefore a maximum of 34pts available. Jahisha Thomas led the way with 64.5pts to come 4th overall from almost 100 athletes with 3rd in the 2-lap and 2nd in the Long Jump. Megan Waller was 6th in the 2-lap and excellent in the relays (40pts). Maria Kavanagh showed her usual determination and ran a good 6-lap for 7th place (43pts). Amy and Tessa Billups performed well, and enthusiatically on their debut, along with Tamar Swire who filled in late on for an absentee. Good stuff.
The B team peformed consistently, with Maya Bruney (33pts), Vanessa La Fon (43pts) and Nicholette Pollard-Odle (36pts) doing well. We had a mix up in the sprint relay, where we were going extremely well, but stopped short of the finish line, was funny but costly points-wise. Issy Smith did really well in the longer 6-lap race, and recorded our 2nd fastest time. Issy and Emma Smith looked good in the Parrlauf, just fading slightly at the end. Emma and debutante Maria Were ran well in the obstacle relay. A good show from the Girls.
The C team performed well with Leanne Cooper scoring a very impressive 42pts. She was 8th in the Vertical Jump. If she can match her training heights from Coulsdon High, she can win this next time ! Olivia Smith looked really good in the relays, and we did really well in the Paarlauf with Leanne and Bronte Rowlands. Debutantes Jazz Crawford and Bassey Oboyo performed well, with Bassey putting the Shot further than anyone else. Whitney Sesay ran as a non-scorer, and performed well enough to be included next time with an excellent time in the 4-lap race in particular. Well done Girls.
U15 Girls
What can I say. Another Sportshall meeting, another victory for our Girls, albeit by the slenderest of margins, 1.5pts, with 8 teams competing.
With 3 athletes from each team in each individual event, there was a maximum of 21pts available. Sophie Small (61pts) was impressive in winning the 2-lap event and the Vertical Jump to finish 2nd overall. Harriet Field (50pts) was 2nd in the 4-lap and 3rd in the Speed Bounce to finish 6th overall. Shanice Harrison was 7th overall (49pts), 3rd in the 2-lap, and gave the team the lead in the sprint relay, in which we finished 2nd. Janet Foskett and Jenny Hewett were excellent in the relay to give us a chance on the last leg, although we just failed by inches to overhaul Kingston. Naomi Poyser and Jenny also ran well in the 4-lap. Harriet maintained her 2-year unbeaten record in the Paarlauf with excellent help from Naomi. Well done, keep it up Girls.
Looking forward to the next one on Sunday 2nd December from 12:00 onwards. It was a pleasure to watch, and all our athletes behaved impeccably and sportingly, which was good to see. Anne and I will be selecting again soon for the next event, so keep up the training !!
