CROSS COUNTRY AND ROAD RUNNING
SLH had a very good turnout for the Surrey Young Athletes Cross Country Relay Championships at Stoke Park, Guildford on Saturday 6 October. They had four U13 Girls’ teams, four U13 Boys’ teams, two U15 Boys’ and two U17 Boys’ teams, as well as an U15 Girls’ team.   Read more below:
The U13 Girls performed excellently winning silver medals, with a team comprising Sophie Foreman, Ruth Myburgh and Maria Kavanagh.

The U17 Boys’ ‘A’ team (Daniel Sellman, Dominic Steiert and Matt Grant) also won silver medals. The ‘B’ team (Alex Rice, Jack Bourne and Ben McDaniel) was just behind for the bronze medals. Matt ran the 3rd fastest time of the day, with Daniel running the 5th fastest.

At the first Surrey League Cross Country Matches held last weekend, in both the senior men’s race at Wimbledon Common and the senior women’s race at Esher, SLH team numbers were down and despite some brilliant individual performances, team finishing places were below the level normally achieved. The women’s A team finishing ninth and the men’s sixth.

SLH’s youngsters, however, were again very strong with the Under 17 boys winning in fine style with Daniel Sellman winning the race, Matt Grant finishing 3rd, Alex Rice 5th and Ben McDaniel 12th. The under 15 boys had Adam Gye in 6th and David Sidwell 23rd. Ben Foreman was 7th for the under 13’s.

In the girls under 15 race at Esher, Helen Wilson finished 10th and in the under 13’s Marie Kavanagh was 9th and Ruth Myburgh 13th.

SLH men took team honours at the Beckley (near Rye) 10km on Sunday with Pawel Pal missing out on a win by just 6 seconds. Matt Birchley was 21st and Paul Weir 42nd.

In the Cabbage Patch Ten Mile Road Race Chris Phelan was 15th (56.16), Paul Mitchell 78th (62.35) and Christine Costiff 242nd  (69.59).
