Barry Attwell successfully defies the aging process. He first won the Gibb Cup, South London Harriers’ 5 mile Cross Country Championship trophy, back in 1985 and although he’s won it on several occasions since, in last Saturday’s Gibb he showed he can still out-sprint younger opposition to once again get his hands on the trophy and title.

Throughout the race, run at Farthing Downs, Coulsdon, Barry was always in the leading trio along with clubmates Chris Phelan and Jim Burdett, but it was his final lunge for the finish line that gave him the win, with Chris Phelan recording the same time of 29.04. Jim Burdett was a worthy third place in 29.08. 4th placed Daniel Gillett, a new recruit to SLH, was also very close behind finishing in 29.14. David Ogden was 5th in 29.50 and awarded the prize for first veteran runner.

Winner of the Women’s race and championship title was Gemma Marrs with a time of 31.46. Ruth Hutton was 2nd exactly one minute behind Gemma and Beckie Woodland was 3rd in 34.13. 4th placed Trudy Kuhn won the veteran’s prize.

There was also a prize for the first (non-SLH) team and this went to David Fisher, and Alan and Mary Mattthews of Tadworth AC.

SLH hold their open Pirie 10 mile Cross Country Championship race on Saturday 1 December. Anyone interested can obtain further details on the club’s website (southlondonharriers.org).

Jason Simpson, of South London Harriers, had an excellent run in Sunday’s Geoff Moulden Wimbledon 10 mile Road Race finishing 2nd in a high quality field.

The race was won by Bedford and County AC’s GB International Huw Lobb in 51.58. Jason’s time was an impressive 52.33 for which he won the first veteran runner’s prize. In 3rd place was another GB International, John MacFarlane of Thames Hare and Hounds with a time of 53.11.

Three other SLH men made up the club’s team that finished in 4th place. These were Chris Phelan (who as reported, had raced so well the day before) 31st in 64.48; Jamie Martin, 46th in 68.15; and Simon Rosser, 57th in 70.00.
