News from South London Harriers
September 9th, 2007: Surrey Road Relays
Posted by Brian and Viv at 5:59 pmSouth London Harriers turned out in force and had results to match with an almost clean sweep of gold medals at the Surrey Road Relays held at Wimbledon Park last Saturday, with only the senior men dropping a place to silver position.
The course which starts and finishes in the park’s athletics track follows an undulating 5km loop on the roads around the park and was run in almost perfect conditions.
The Senior Women’s team was led off by Pippa Major who timed 17.43 with Gemma Marrs on leg two running 17.44. Michelle Jenkins (18.17) handed over to new recruit Georgie Bruinvels whose fastest lap of the day by a senior woman of 16.58 bought the team home in gold medal position.
The over 35 women’s team was led off by a very fit Ruth Hutton, just returned from Hamburg where she won her age group at the Triathlon World Championships. Ruth’s 17.43 was the fastest lap of the day. Viv Mitchell ran 19.05, Lisa Thompson 19.29 and Pippa Major, running her second leg of the day did 18.52, bringing the team home in first spot.
The over 45 woman also won their event with Jo Quantrill running 20.40, Pam Iannella 21.48, Trudy Kuhn 21.19 and Viv Mitchell (second run), 20.01.
The Senior Men’s race of six stages was led off by Tom Jenkins who completed his lap in 14mins 58secs for fourth place and handed over to Ray Marriott who maintained fourth with his 15.22. Tim Chidgey pulled up to second place with another 15.22 and handed on to Jason Simpson whose 14.35 put the team in the lead. Jim Burdett dropped back to second with 15.42 which left Stuart Major, just returning from injury, too much to do on the final leg and although he ran 14.55 he could only maintain the second spot, just 25 seconds down on the winners Belgrave Harriers.
The men’s vet 40 team of Paul Mitchell (17.19), Andy Evans (17.01), Mike Airey (15.57) and Chris Phelan (15.53) also won gold: Chris Phelan’s lap earning him the fastest lap medal.
Not to be outdone the vet 50 men of Glenn Quarton (16.20), Ian Kitching (17.06), John Quaintance (17.05) and Barry Attwell (16.41) also took gold in their age group.
In addition to the above, SLH had B and C Teams competing for the ladies and a full senior men’s B team.
South London Harriers look forward to the forthcoming cross country season!
