August 28th, 2007: Young Athletes Cross Country 2007-8
Posted by Ian Field at 3:25 pmAlthough the weather in wintery, we are not quite there yet, but here is the info you need to plan for the new Cross Country season.
SLH enter the Surrey Cross-Country Leagues against all other running clubs in the County. We have teams for Boys and Girls separately, and indeed it is likely the fixtures are at different venues. We will notify you of these when they have been decided. The fixtures are on the following dates :-
Saturdays - 13th October, 10th November, 12th January, 9th February.
SLH will have teams entered in the Under20, U17, U15 and U13 age groups. The distances vary between 1 and 4 miles depeding on age, gender and venue, with younger athletes running the shorter distances. We are hoping to encourage as many runners as possible in each age group. Although it is the first 3/4 who count as the A team for points, it is possible to enter as many as we require. It would be good to have as many runners as wish to run so that we end up with B and even C teams in different categories.
The traditional season-opening race is held at Stoke Park, in Guildford, and is a relay. Teams of 3 from each age grouip will run approximately 1 mile before handing over to the next runner. This makes for a good team spirit and co-operation to start the season. It’s also great fun !! All support is most welcome.
Relays - Saturday 6th October - Stoke Park, Guildford
Later in the New Year come the Championships, also in all age groups. Please speak to your coaches about these. You will need to send entry forms in etc., and will also get guidance as to the standard and suitability of these events. The dates / venues are as follows :-
Surrey County Champs - Saturday 5th January - Lloyd Park, Croydon
South of England Champs - Saturday 26th January - Parliament Hills, Central London
National Champs - Saturday 23rd February - Alton Towers, Midlands
Hope the training is going well, and look forward to seeing many of you out running this Winter. See Anne Roden (Boys) or Ian Field (Girls) for more details.
