News from South London Harriers
August 6th, 2007: Events w/e Sat. 4 August 2007
Posted by Brian and Viv at 5:03 pmSouth London Harriers were the ‘gatecrashers’ to the ‘top-of-the-table party’ at Match 5 of the Southern Track and Field League hosted by Victoria Park AC at Mile End last Saturday. On the plus side, several of the SLH athletes happily mixed it with the best - with wins in javelin, long jump and the 1500m to the credit of Peter Wickens, Darren Brown and Tom Jenkins respectively. Jenkins provided what one onlooker called “the race of the match” in winning the ‘A’ string 1500m in 4:09.4 by only a tenth of a second. Debut scoring roles from Shane Christy (3rd in the 400m ‘B’ string) and Bryce England (3rd in the 5000m ‘B’ string), plus a return to scoring from Olivier Serviable (2nd in the Triple Jump ‘B’ string 3rd in the Long Jump ‘B’ string), Francis Staunton (4th in the 5000m ‘A’ string) and Michael McManus (4th in the 800m ‘A’ string) , meant the regular squad was expanded to 16 athletes. Aaron Broderick ran a new personal best time of 23.6 in the 200m ‘B’ string.
However, with an injury list scripted from an episode of ‘Casualty’ (starring pleurisy, cracked ribs and twisted ankles), SLH lacked the required strength in depth, especially in the hurdling events. With Herne Hill Harriers, Victoria Park Harriers and Blackheath & Bromley Ladies Harriers all vying for promotion, SLH could only manage 4th place in the match.

On the weekend of 28th and 29th July the British Masters Track and Field Championships were held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. On the Saturday afternoon Alison Collins of South London Harriers finished a disappointing 5th in the W40 400m, her preferred event. This disappointment enabled her to fully focus her attention on the 800m the following day.
She started the 800m with great determination, leading the field by the break at 100m. Around the mid-way mark other runners came through and with 200m to go Alison found herself back in 4th place, but this only served to inspire her to a superb sprint to the line to get a hard earned and fully deserved championship silver medal in a season’s best time of 2m 30s.
