July 21st, 2007: Young Athletes League - Match 4
Posted by Ian Field at 12:28 pmThe 4th and final Young Athletes match at Horsham was on July 21st. A holiday-affected SLH team came 3rd from the 6 teams, which means we finish 3rd overall in the league. SLH have 18 league pts, Horsham 18.5pts and East Grinstead 20pts. A good season by all competing athletes, and I look forward to next season when will will have a much-needed boost to the U17 girls section which will help hugely. There is a good flow of talented youngsters coming through at the U13 level as well.
U17 Boys
John Iwudibie was 2nd in the A 100m (11.7) and 3rd in the A 200m (23.8), with Jacob Andrews 2nd in the B 100m (12.1), and Ben Winters making his debut, winning the B 200m (24.9). Ben McDaniel ran well to win the A 800m (2:06.5), but we were short of long distance boys this time around. Jacob then looked superb in his first attemopt at the 400m Hurdles which ended in victory in a very impressive time (60.1). Richard Humphreys covered the throws single-handedly, winning the Javelin (22.73m), 4th in the Hammer (15.43m) and 3rd in the Shot (7.50m). Olivia Serviable (5.36m) and Jacob (4.93m) made a clean sweep of the Long Jump. Olivia then came 2nd in the Triple Jump just 3cm short of his PB (11.60m).
U15 Boys
Afam Obe-Adewole won the 100m A string (12.3) with Dylan Blake-Mills 2nd in the B (13.1). Neil Fuhrman was 5th in the 200m A (26.5) with Dylan 3rd in the B (26.2). Richard Morris was 3rd in the B 400m (64.5) with a subdued Adam Atkins 5th in the A (68.8). Adam Atkins ran much better in the 800m coming 2nd in the A string (2:33.4) with Richard 2nd in the B (2:35.1). Adam Gye stormed away in the 1500m to win the A string (4:31.5) and Gregory Campbell, with a monumental effort, 2nd in the B string (5:02.3) a PB. In the 80mH Tom O’Flaherty was 4th in the A (16.0) with Richard, showing improvement here, was 2nd in the B (16.5). In the throws, Tom Bullen was dependable as ever, coming 2nd in all 3 A strings. Javelin (30.53m), Discus (28.81m) and Shot (10.32m) losing out by just 3cm. Toryn austin was a fine B string backup with 2nd in the Discus (19.78m) 2nd in the Shot (7.69m) and 3rd in the Javelin (18.00m). Neil was 2nd in the A Long Jump with a very good leap (5.05m) with George Gomez winning the B string (4.53m). George was also 4th in the High Jump although way below his best.
U13 Boys
Finn Nightingale continued his excellent sprint season by winning the 100m a string comfortably (13.5), with Danny Holmes 2nd in the B (15.3). Finn then won the B 200m (30.0) while Tyrie Obuks was 2nd in the A 200m (28.2). Elliot Watts ran his best race of the season to come 3rd in the 800m A (2:47.7), with Laurence Rook, making his debut, 2nd in the B race (2:53.3). In the 1500m, another good debut run from Tom Aubertin, who was 4th (5:36.9). Saul Thompson was agin exdcellent in the 75mH B string coming 2nd (14.4), while Danny Homes struggled a little with 3rd in the A string (20.3). Saul, however, was below his normal high standards with 5th in the Shot (3.02m). The usually reliable partnership of 4 metre long jumpers, Finn (3.99m) and Tyrie (3.89m), were 3rd and 1st respectively. Elliot then showed us previously hidden talent he has, as he came 2nd in the A High Jump (1.20m). Well done boys.

U15 Girls
Shanice continued her good season with 2nd in both sprints, 100m (13.3), 200m (26.7), both excellent times. She continues to rise up the Surrey Rankings. Sophie Small is still right on her shoulder, winning the B 100m (13.5). In the 800m, Amy Mitchell ran well for 2nd in the A race with a PB (2:34.8), but we were short of other distance runners. Sophie continued her good form in the 75mH to gain 2nd in the A string (13.0) in a very tight race. Shanice (4.05m) and Sophie (3.99m) combined again for 3rd in the A and 2nd in the B Long Jump. Amy came up against a high standard High Jump, and was 4th on countback (1.30m). Amy then was 5th in the A Javelin (13.06m), withn Lily Holder 4th in the B (9.74m). Lily was also 3rd in the A Discus (14.98m), and won the B Shot (6.50m). Chioma Obe-Adewole was 3rd in the B Discus (14.92m) and 4th in the A Shot (6.79m). A good effort.
U13 Girls
Megan Waller had the best race of her season so far, making up for a disappointing earlier 150m, edging out 2 other runners in an extremely tight 75m A race to win (11.2). Nicholette Pollard-Ode, on her debut, was 4th in the B (11.7) in a time that would also have been 4th in the A string. Megan was 5th in the 150m (21.9) with Zoe Collins, in her first sprint event this season, a close 2nd in the B string (22.2). Ruth Myburgh ran a very good 800m to win trhe A string (2:43.9) with Catherine Campbell 2nd in the B with a huge PB (2:59.9). Zoe was back to come a good 2nd place in the 1200m A race (4:55.0). Megan was 3rd in the 70mH A (14.0) with Nicholette 3rd in the B (14.8). Ruth, a little below her best (3.13m) and Nicholette (2.84m) were both 4th in their Long Jumps A and B. Some run-up practice will pull those distances up considerably, and they both look capable of that. Megan Nightingale was 4th in the Shot A (4.30m) with a debut for Iyani Obe-Adewole, 4th in the B (4.00m). Good going girls.
The relays, as always, provide perhaps the best entertainment, and SLH seem to be at their best here as well. In the U17 Boys, John, Jacob, Ben and Olivier won the 4×100m AND the 4×400m races ! Fantastic ! In the U15 Boys, Adam G, Richard, Tom and Afam won the 4×400m, while Neil, Afam, George and Dylan were 3rd in the 4×100m. The U13 boys finally learned how to pass the baton, after a ouple of errors earlier in the season, and duly cruised to a huge victory in the 4×100m. The team was Tyrie, Saul, Finn and Danny. The U15 Girls managed to win a very tight finish in the 4×100m with Shanice, Zoe, Amy and Sophie. Just like some of the GB teams of the past, Sophie really seems to be able to pull out all the stops in the relays. The U13 Girls were 2nd in their 4×100m with Ruth, Megan N, Nicholette and Megan W.
Good stuff. The whole Young Athletes section is looking strong on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and more good thing will come.
Best of luck to all the athletes moving up to the U20/Senior level. I would like to especially thank Jacob Andrews, Danile Sellman and Sian Mitchell who have been big points scorers for us over the years.
