Posted by Brian and Viv at 12:42 pmA brilliant run by South London Harriers’ 15 year old Frederica Foster, representing Surrey at the English Schools Championships held in Birmingham over the weekend, saw her finish second in her 800m race in 2.13.29. More news below:
On Saturday, the popular Elmore 7 road race was again this year organised by the Club. This well attended charity event is an integral part of the Chipstead Flower Show with the race starting and finishing in the showground and is popular with local club runners, joggers and fun runners alike. The nominated local charity to receive the proceeds on this occasion was the Brain Injury Centre, Banstead. This year’s race was one of the few in its history won by a non-SLH runner. Kevin Quinn of Aldershot, Farnham and District Club taking the honours in a time of 38.45 for the demanding, undulating course with SLH’s Stuart Major just returning from injury to finish second in 39.33. J Wolf (club undeclared) was third in 39.42. First male over 40 veteran was Carl Plumpton of City of Portsmouth Club in 40.08 with first male over 50 being SLH’s Ian Kitching in 41.50. First male vet 60, also from SLH, was Ken Lee in 49.01.
The women’s race was won by SLH’s Pippa Major, a lady vet 35, in 45.44 with Phyllis Flynn from the Stragglers Club (lady vet 45) second in 47.56. Third woman finisher was again from SLH, Viv Mitchell (lady vet 45) in 49.36. First lady vet 55 was Sue Garner in 54.30.
The course record-holder for the Elmore 7, Jason Simpson, this year turned his attentions to the Elmbridge 10km, which is part of the Surrey Road League series, being held the following day and added another win to his recent considerable successes in 32.16. Chris Phelan (vet 40) decided to take in both events, having finished sixth in Saturday’s Elmore event, then finished 18th on Sunday in 35.23. Pawel Bal finished 19th in 35.29, Paul Mitchell 44th in 38.11, Alex Halpin 50th in 38.39, Neil Maury 125th in 41.41. Christine Costiff was SLH’s first woman to finish Elmbridge in 42.12 with Matthew Birchley timing 44.28, Trudy Kuhn 47.03 and Nigel Costiff 47.18.
Thursday, 26th July, sees the third of the club’s summer evening informal 10km series run over Farthing Downs. Details from southlondonharriers.org.
