July 11th, 2007: Young Athletes League - Match 3

Posted by Ian Field at 10:00 pm

The Young Athletes again performed well in the 3rd league match of the season, and gained a creditable 3rd place, and were just short of a few points which would have meant second place. We now have to finish in the top 2 in the last match to guarantee promotion.

Some good individual performances, noted below, from lots of athletes. Some events are still not getting covered, and coaches will be looking for volunteers this time around. Until some of these can be filled, we are always going to struggle for promotion a little, through no fault of the athletes who are already competing in multiple events. Still, there’s still a chance, so let’s really go for it at the last match in Horsham on Sunday 22nd July.

Overall points scores were :-

Horsham/Haywards Heath                529.5
East Grinstead                                468
SLH                                               430.5
Epsom and Ewell                             332
Sutton and Belgrave                        242
Redhill and Surrey Beagles                103

U17 Boys

John Inudibie continued his good form with 2nd in the A 100m (11.7) and 2nd in the 200m (23.7). He was ably supported by Jacob Andrews who was 2nd in both the B strings (12.2 and 24.5). Daniel Sellman won both the 800m (2:09.3) and 1500m (4:30.2) supported by Jack Bourne who won the B 800m (2:17.3) and Ben McDaniel who was 2nd in the B 1500m (4:41.1). We didn’t have any hurdlers, steeplechasers or 3000m runners. In the throws, Richard Humphreys held the fort, with 4th in the Hammer (15.20m) and 3rd in the Javelin (22.79m). He also won the B Shot (7.28m), where Ben was 3rd in the A string (7.47m). Jack also was 2nd in the B Javelin (11.75m). We had no Pole Vaulters or High Jump, but did really well in the other jumps. Ben won the A Long Jump (5.15m) with Olivier Serviable winning the B (5.13m). Olivier then won the A Triple jump (10.74m). The boys ran well in the 4×100m to win, and were 2nd in the 4×400m. Daniel Sellman doing a great job on the final leg against a very fast athlete, in spite of the distances he had already run during the afternoon.

U15 Boys

Neil Fuhrmann was 3rd in the A 100m (13.0) and 4th in the 200m (26.1), and George Gomez was 2nd in the B 100m (13.0) and 3rd in the B 200m (26.7). Newcomer Alfie Bright  was 3rd in the A 800m (2:23.8) and Adam Gye continued to impress winning the 1500m (4:36.5), with Greg Campbell 3rd in the B (5:06.1). Tom O’Flaherty was 4th in the 80mH (16.5) with Sam Bainbridge 2nd in the B (16.8). Tom Bullen was again excellent in the throws with victory in the Discus (29.79m) 2nd in the Shot (9.82m) and 3rd in a very high class Javelin (27.57m). Adi Obe-Akenwole was 2nd in the B Discus (9.87m) but showed great potential in this his first effort at the event. Toryn Dean was 2nd in the B Shot (7.04m) and 3rd in the B Javelin (17.04m). A clean sweep in the Long Jump with Neil winning the A with an excellent 5.11m. Tom O’F won the B (4.10m). The boys were then 3rd in their 4×100m relay.

U13 Boys

In this age group, we are performing very strongly indeed. Saul Thompson is pushing for A string status having won the B 100m (14.8) and the B 75mH in a superb time (14.7). Danny Holmes was 4th in the A 100m (15.1) and Jordan Williams on his debut, won the A 75mH (15.8). Tyrie Obuks was 2nd in the A 200m (29.5) with Finn Nightingale 2nd in the B (29.0). Ben Foreman ran really well to finish 4th in the 800m (2:42.1) and finished just 3 seconds behind the winner. Another debutante, Tom Aubertin, looked to have great potential, and was 3rd in the 1500m (5:42.0). In the therows, Tyrie won the Shot (5.50m) with Finn 3rd in the B (3.72m). Finn and Tyrie were a little below their normal dominance in the Long Jump. Finn was 3rd in the A (3.70m) with Tyrie 2nd in the B (3.69m). A fantastic, and unheard of, clean sweep in the High jump was achieved through Ollie Henke (1.20m) and Ben Foreman (1.10m). The boys battled well, and should have won the relay, but for some baton juggling. They all promised to justify their selection by winning next time, and I would not bet against that. Well done.

U17 Girls

Sian Mitchell WAS our U17 girls team. She performed admirably as always, in spite of lacking training due to exams, and scored valuable points. Sian ran in the 100m (13.8), 200m (28.6), had a superb 2nd in the 80mH (13.1).

U15 Girls

Shanice Harrison won the 100m (13.4) and was 2nd in the 200m in a PB (26.9). Janet Foskett was 3rd in the B 200m (29.5). Nicola Bascombe supported in the B 100m (14.9). Helen Wilson was 2nd in the 800m (2:36.2) with Naomi Poyser winning the B (2:43.2). Amy Mitchell ran well and was 3rd in the 1500m in a new PB (5:25.6). Janet was 3rd in the 75mH (14.8) despite a slight injury. Unfortunately we missed the Long Jump. I won’t name names ! Jenny Hewett was unlucky to have to compete in the High jump just as a huge thunderstorm came over. Everyone else took cover except the jumpers. She struggled through the puddles to come 4th (1.15m). In the throws, Georgina West continued to go well, and was 2nd in the Discus by just 6cm (18.90m), 3rd in the B Javelin (12.14m) and 2nd in the A Shot (8.29m). Amy threw 13.14m in the Javelin A, and newcomer Chioma Obi-Adewole won the B Discus (15.47m) and was 2nd in the B Shot (6.43m). There’s more to come from her. The girls finished 3rd in the 4×100m relay.

U13 Girls

Jahisha Thoms was 2nd in the A 75m (10.8) with newcomer Ellie Bunce looking very good with 2nd in the B (11.4). Megan Waller was 3rd in the A 150m (22.2) with Maya Bruney 3rd in the B (25.0). Sophie Foreman, cheered to the roof by her family, won the 800m with a PB in a tight finish (2:46.2), with the tiny figure of Bronte Rowlands 4th in the B string with a PB (3:10.4). Maria Kavanagh then was 2nd in the 1200m with another PB (4:25.6). Jahisha suffered defeat for the only time this season in the 70mH although given the same time as the winner (11.9). Megan, who is looking better each match after a long injury lay-off, was 2nd in the B (14.1). Jahisha then won the High Jump (1.28m) with another newcomer Chanonne Graham 3rd in thje B (1.05m). Ellie then jumped well for 3rd in the A Long Jump (3.40m) with Megan, a bit below her best, with 3rd in the B (3.25m). Chanonne was then 3rd in the Shot (5.25m) and May 3rd in the B (4.82m). The girls rounded off a very good day with 2nd in the relay. Well done girls.
