South London Harriers had the first nine finishers in the June running of their popular Near-as-Damn-It 10k trail races.

Chris Phelan (v40 runner) and Matt Chapman (a recent SLH signing) were fighting it out shoulder to shoulder for most of the race and it was only in the last ½ mile that Phelan was able to pull away to claim his first Near-as-Damn-It victory (and 1st mv40) in a time of 36.47 with Chapman 11 seconds behind.

Mike Airey and Andy Collins had their own race-long tussle for the next two positions and it was Airey who reached the line for 3rd place in 37.18 beating Collins into 4th place in 37.34. Dave Ogden was 5th in 38.46, Paul Mitchell 6th in 38.51, Ian Kitching 7th (1st v50) in 39.07, Andrew Aitken 8th in 39.10 and Andy Davis 9th in 39.29. First and second visitors were Daniel Gillett of Collingwood AC (10th in 40.15) and Mark Humphrey of Belgrave Harriers (11th in 39.34). 1st woman (and 1st wv35) was SLH’s Pippa Major (15th overall in 41.28), Stragglers’ Phyllis Flynn was 2nd (1st wv45) in a time of 43.10 and Rachel Coe-O’Brien of SLH was 3rd in 43.16.

The final race in this series is on Thursday 26 July. The race starts at 7.30pm at the Coulsdon end of Farthing Downs. Anyone interested in taking part should register by 6.30pm at SLH’s HQ at 194a Brighton Road, opposite Coulsdon Library. For more information see the club’s website at www.southlondonharriers.org
