June 25th, 2007: DYSART DASH 10K report

The third of the County Championships were held at Petersham. We have stopped listening to the weather forecasts as they can no longer be relied on.

Looking west towards Leith Hill on the journey to the race it was slate grey with steady rain falling. On the very quiet roads from Coulsdon to Richmond of the Sunday morning speedy progress was made. Another advantage of the earlier start. Upon arrival we seemed to fall straight into the prime parking “lot”!

The rain seemed to strengthen from time to time but at least the temperatures were not so exotic as last year, and the under floor heating was switched off this time! Nevertheless the weathergods were very benevolent as the hour from 9 to 10 o’clock was certainly dryish.

Warming up was necessary though and an inspection of the couple of hundred metres beyond the start established that it would be a difficult one with cars parked as they were and a number of dog walkers changing into their wellies before they went into the bushes.

Apart from the runners right at the very front everybody else must have been held up for at least 15 secs one way or another. It was not really until just before the grass field with the finish before one could get into one’s stride but not for long!

The tow path was not as one would like to find it, and certainly not in a championship road race. Deep puddles, mud, flints, bricks and edgings of small parts of paved areas ensured that one had to look very careful where one was going to land one’s feet next. As a result there was little time to pay attention to the warning note that other users of the path should be respected!

A head on collision with one runner (this one keeping left) coming the other way was only just avoided by sharp braking and veering sharp left. The cyclists going the same way as us at least shouted and tried to stay to the right of us. During the second lap a more difficult time was had by the mother and daughter with bikes coming towards us but at least they were sensible, unlike the runner also coming towards us who was keeping to the right!

During the second lap the condition of the tow path had deteriorated so much that one could have been forgiven if one was thinking of doing a xc race during one of the drier times, as everybody was splattered generously with mud which caked on well. (Maybe one ought to look for a slightly more suitable venue for the “Surrey road 10k Champs”??) It was fun though but…
For the third time the Surrey Champion was our own Jason Simpson and again about a minute ahead of the field! Chris Phelan and Pawel Bal came in 12th and 13th. With that line up I had thought we would have a very good chance to be very close to being first for the team prize, it was thought before the race; which proved to be right! Except that there were only two points between the first four teams. There cannot have been many circumstances that the team prize has been that closely contested! In the event I am not going to predict the outcome for the Surrey champs. But clearly these odd few seconds at the beginning could have affected the outcome? Or that difficult tow path?

TEAMS MEN:  (3 to Score)
1  Belgrave H            24           2+4+17
2  Ranelagh H           25           6+8+11
3  South London H    26          1+12+13
4  Stragglers             26          2+5+19
5  Hercules/Wim.       61          9+21+31

The other SLHers finished as follows:- at 40 Andy Evans who was just 4 secs ahead of the first woman Ceri Diss (w35+) 37.39; at 50 Paul Mitchell who was initially ahead of another lady but this was corrected in the final results to a man! Alex Halpin at 60 only just 1 sec ahead of Peter Giles the first 60+

Pippa Major (w35+) is now 7th lady overall at 84 (our only lady taking part). But she is after the correction third w35 and for the Surrey Champs 2nd (assuming the Serpentine lady does not qualify).

102   Nigel Bush; 146   Warwick Bilham; 161   Colin Young; 224   Jonathan Burke  were followed by  250 Jake Clausen; 259   Richard Oliver and 312   Terry Ward who were all placed one lower after an additional runner was found for place 100!

A number of brave supporters had ventured out some of which were recognised amongst them was Richard Carter, Clive Williams and Carol, Bob and Lauren Evans - thanks for cheering us on.
