ROAD AND TRAIL RUNNING
Jason Simpson won last Sunday’s Dorking 10 mile road race in 53mins 11secs, having battled with Jamie Atkinson from Blackheath for most of the race and in so doing won the Surrey 10 mile championship to add to the county half marathon medal he won 3 weeks ago. Further honours went to S.L.H. with Pippa Major taking second W35 in 67.20, Mike Airey third M40, 58.13 (9th place overall) and Ian Kitching first V50 in 61.46 (23rd). SLH men took the first team award and SLH women took second team award (4 to score). This well organised event was run in blistering sunshine.
The previous Thursday, S.L.H. had hosted the first of it’s popular summer evening informal 10km’s over Farthing Downs, attracting a field of 63 runners. Jason Simpson, who was obviously saving himself for Sunday’s Dorking championship, eased his way round the course in third place until the last half mile when he overtook Matt Chapman and Chris Phelan to win in 37.00 minutes. Declan Flynn from Stragglers in 7th place was the first non-SLH to finish. Pippa Major was again the leading lady, finishing in 42.01. First M50 went to John Quaintance in 40.17. First W45 was Jo Quantrill in 45.04 and first M60 was Dave Parkinson in 46.41
One of the club’s younger members, 14 year old Adam Gye, was disappointed with his time (50.55) until he realised he had run an extra loop. We look forward to the next race on 28th June to see what Adam can do for 10k instead of 12k!
