June 3rd, 2007: Young Athletes League - Match 2

Posted by Ian Field at 8:45 pm

A nice sunny day full of excitement at Broadbridge Heath ended with the Young Athletes finishing a close up 3rd. This means we currently are leading the league after 2 matches, with 2 more to come.

U17 Boys

John Inudibie again lead the sprinters in a successful day, 2nd in the A 200 (23.9) and 1st in the 100m B (11.7), with Jacob 3rd in the A 100m (11.8). Daniel Sellman was 2nd in a closely run 800m with 3 athletes in it up to the line (2:06.7). Daniel had a busy day as he then returned to win the A 1500m comfortably (4:27.0). Ben McDaniel was 3rd in the 400m A (54.3) and Dominic Steiert 2nd in the B (58.5). In the field newcomer Sam Chinque jumped excellently to come 3rd in the A Long Jump (5.29m). Jacob Andrews achieved the same distance to win the B (5,29m). Richard Humpheys competed well in the Shot (7.50m), 2nd in the A Hammer (16.70m) and Javelin (21.40m) and Ben threw the shot in the A string (8.43m). We were a bit short in the field, and were sad not to compete in some events, especially the Triple Jump and Discus. Well done lads, good stuff.

U17 Girls

This time Loulou had some support as we fielded 2 girls this time, with Frederica Foster filling in as an U17. Frederica in the A 300m (42.0) and Loulou in the B 300m (45.5) completed the double winning both. Frederica the finished 3rd in the A 100m (13.3) and has found a new event, coming 2nd in the A shot (6.59m). Loulou was 3rd in the A Triple Jump (9.21m). Hopefully we will have another 2 girls next time, as the GCSEs will have finished by then. Well done both of you.

U15 Boys

The Adam show rolled on, with Adam Gye 2nd in the A 800m (2:13.4) and Adam Atkins winning the B (2:36.6). Sadly a no show in the 400m, but Neil Fuhrmann ran well in the sprints with A 200m (26.4) and 3rd in the A 100m (13.2). He was ably supported by new member Afam Obi who won the B 100m (12.4) but unfortunately missed the 200m. Greg Campbell ran well in the A 1500m (5:20.4) and James McDonald was 3rd in the B 1500m (5:46.2). In the field it was good to see Tom Bullen back. He won the A Discus with a huge throw (31.99m), 32nd in the A Shot (10.36m) and 5th a very high standard Javelin (27.60m). The Long Jump brought much needed points with Neil 2nd in the A (5.04m) with Afam winning the B (4.94m). We struggled with no-one available in the High Jump, Hurdles, or Hammer and no B string throwers. Volunteers required for next time boys. Well done all, keep it up.

U15 Girls

Shanice Harrison excelled coming 2nd in the A 200m (26.9) with Harriet Field 2nd in the B (28.2). Hannah Field was 2nd in the A 800m (2:38.8). Hannah then ran ever unpopular A 75H (16.3), and Janet decided at the last second to do the B string and ran superbly for 2nd place (13.7). She now has the job in the A string ! Janet in the A (14.1 carrying a slight injury) and Nicola Bascombe the B (14.7) struggled a little bit in the 100m, but both later ran well in the relay. Helen Wilson was 4th in the A 1500m (5:39.0), and Catherine Campbell was 2nd in the B with a PB (6:07.0). In the field, Georgina West continued her good form in winning the A Discus (22.57m) and the A Shot (8.44m) with Amy Mitchell winning the B Discus (13.81m) and the B Shot (6.35m). Harriet Field won the A Javelin with a PB (22.33m) and Georgina almost completed a throws clean sweep as she came 2nd in the B (13.49m) just 5cm short of winning it. In the jumps, Hannah was 3rd in the A Long Jump (3.79m) with Nicola winning the B (3.48m). Amy was near her PB in the High Jump, coming 3rd (1.35m) in the A. Well done girls, with nearly all events covered.

U13 Boys

Newly crowned Surrey Champion Tyrie Obuks was 2nd in the A 200m (28.4), and won’t take the bend so easily again. Finn Nightingale won the B (29.5). A good double act saw Ben Foreman 2nd in the A 800m (2:43.1) with Elliot Watts winning the B (2:43.8). Finn came back to win the A 100m by a large margin (13.5), with young Saul Thompson 2nd in the B (15.0). Jack Ralph ran well to come 3rd in the A 1500m (5:27.1). Ben also bravely got up from the floor when up with the leaders to finish the 75H A (18.3). Saul looked comfortable winning the B string in a time that would have won the A race (14.5). In the field, we had no high jumpers, but Finn was 2nd in the A Long Jump (4.24m) just 5cm from winning it, and Tyrie was 2nd in the B (4.02m). Saul was 2nd in the A Shot (5.68m) with Tyrie winning the B (5.35m). A very good performance overall by the boys.

U13 Girls

Megan Waller ran well to come 3rd in a very close 150m (22.1). Ruth Myburgh won the A 800m (2:45.7) recovering well as she had run the same race the day before in the Womens League match. Sophie Foreman completed the double winning the B string in a good time (2:50.6). Maria Kavanagh was 2nd in the A 1200m with a PB (4:27.0). In the 75m, Jahisha Thomas won the A race (10.6) with Ruth 3rd in the B (11.5). Jahisha the followed up with a victory in the 70H (11.9), with Megan 2nd in the B (14.1). In the field Jahisha also won the A High Jump with a teriffic PB (1.30m). Maria the A (3.50m) and Sophie the B (3.10m), the 2 smallest members of the team, gamely attacked the Shot. A PB for Sophie. In the Long Jump Megan the A (3.44m) and Ruth the B (3.19m) tried gallantly. Very well done girls.

The 4×100m relays followed all this with some success. The U13 Girls romped home 1st, and the U13 Boys came 2nd just 0.1secs behind the winners. U15 Girls were 2nd also in a close finish, with the U15 Boys 3rd. The U17 Boys also romped home easy winners. The U17 Boys also finished 2nd in the 4×400m relay despite unfortunately dropping the baton while leading.

Overall we finished 3rd as a team behind East Grinstead (1st) and Horsham (2nd), who finished 4th equal last time. We now lead the league after 2 matches, but need to keep up the performances if we are to get promoted. The 2 local teams (above) almost have home advantage as the next 2 matches are also in Horsham. We need your availability and willingness to go the extra mile, and even maybe to offer to do an event you don’t usually do to get the points. You may find you like it, like Janet did in the U15G 75H !!

Well done to all, it was a pleasure to watch so many PBs and good races, throws and jumps. It was good to see such good sportsmanship from our athletes throughout the day. As someone once said, “It’s not just the winning, but the grace and style with which you perform”. We certainly did that.

I would just like to note that there were 2 particularly outstanding performances during the match. Jahisha Thomas recorded the 6th fastest time in the UK this year for the U13G 70Hurdles, so really well done to her. Also, as some of you may have noticed, the U17 Girls Pole Vault saw a new UK age group record set by Jade Ive of Sutton. That was quite spectacular to watch, and good to see so many SLH athletes (and supporters) stopping what they were doing to applaud each attempt of a special performance by another club’s athlete. Excellent. See you all at training, and at the next match on 24th June at the same venue.
