June 3rd, 2007: Dorking 10m Jake’s report
Posted by Chris Phelan at 7:25 pmIt was a beautiful sunny summers day with temperatures of 21C to 24C. One to laze about in the shade or sun with a cool drink. For some of us there was a little jog to do before that.
So instead of the usual 10m sunday long run through the woods and over
the hills from the clubhouse at 9am we were looking forward to a flat
course!
A lift was organised from Redhill station. Just about the moment I came
out of the station this blue car sailed by and even my waving had no
effect! Was that my lift going in to the horizon? Luckily Paul was
looking for the station which was not visible behind the trees until he
had passed me. Thus they turned round and a speedy progress was made to
Brockham where we arrived an hour before the start. After having put some Elmore leaflets on the numerous cars we progressed to the Brockham and got ready.
Quite a number of SLHers were spotted early on, so it looked we had a
good turn out.
However, it was heating up quite nicely and I was sure some of the “hot
weather” precautions were essential and decided to carry almost 2 litres of water with me – they had at gone at the 9mp! – mainly to cool me down but also extra drink in addition to that of the water stations.
Ultimately this strategy did appear the have paid off as in and around
the 1:30 arrival area there are very few runners who managed to equal
last years times let alone better them! I managed to better my time just by 7 seconds….
The other factor which of course had also changed was the route of the
race. At 9.25 we were already urged to go to the new start in a few
minutes! We did go at around 9.32 but although the signed route to the
start was picturesque, off road and windy it was also significantly
longer than the road route. But it nevertheless took us only 10
minutes!!.. There were even toilets near the new start which were
extremely well used. It was good to see that most of the runners remained in the shade until just before the start.
I certainly missed the nice down hill start from the previous years which had enabled me to do the first two miles in 16 minutes. It is a very slow gradual uphill with very little down hill or level sections until the earlier left turn leading into a lovely shade lane – they should all be like that – perhaps our planners could arrange to plant trees all along our lanes in view of the warmer summers!
After another left turn the next few miles were in the bright sunshine.
The first time round Sower Hill does not seem too bad, but as Mike said, this hill had to be done again plus two more in the last 3miles!
The troops lead by Jason went off in the usuall fast way. By the time I
had reached the half way point, everybody looked very hot and tired.
Ahead of me the cat and mouse game between Jason, a little more paced up the hills and Jamie Atkinson a little faster up the hills, was about to come to a conclusion in Jason’s favour! About half a minute faster than last year’s winning time.
What I thought was “coming into my stride” at the 5mp was actually my
marathon pace of 9min/mile. Although I did not think so at the time the
ups and downs of the last few miles actually were such for me that the
pace did not significantly varied for the last 5 miles, except that the
last mile I managed to go a little faster on the down hill and managed to pass about ten runners. Overall I finished in my best placing for the Dorking 10m but not my best time.
The heat and the slightly steeper hills in the last three miles do seem
to have influenced the placings and timings. On a very rough basis
assuming people were in approx the same condition as last year comparing the times for this year and last the pattern appears to be as follows.
For the men about equal from first finisher to 80mins – increasingly
poorer results were achieved by men finishing slower at greater times
then 80mins. For the women this boundary would appear to be about 70mins.
I am showing last years times and positions in brackets for a number of
runners.
Overall we did very well as apart from Jason winning the race we won the team prize for the men. Our first woman was Pippa in 72nd place overall and 7th woman in a time of 1:07:20 and we were second in the womens team price, where Kathy was also part of the winning team. So I am hoping that she is getting a nice medal for her last run with us. In Richard Carter’s words – “Well done to all Dorking 10m runners, you did the club proud!”
A contingent of us went to Coldharbour afterwards, where we found a pub, to drown our sorrows or celebrate our victories or just laze about in the warm sunshine where Jason extensively told us about various races – no not road races but cycling races, which is his real passion, but has not got the time to train for anymore……..
After that I went to the young people’s T&F match at Horsham (Broadbridge Heath) Last time they played they were first but this time only third – it does make a difference where the venue is for the home club!
