Posted by Brian and Viv at 12:34 pmSLH Ladies competed in the second Southern League match at Watford last weekend. With a much depleted team due to injuries, illness and exams, the always ever high spirit and team work pulled them through to finish 2nd behind the hosts Watford.
In the Junior 800m ‘A’ race Hannah Field was third in 2.38.3 and Ruth Myburgh 2nd in the ‘B’ with 2.44.8. Amy Mitchell was 2nd in the ‘A’ 1500m in 5.36.5 and also competed in the High Jump to clear 1m 30. Sophie Small jumped 4.38m in the Long Jump.
In the Senior Events, Michelle Jenkins won the ‘A’ 400m in 66.2 with Alison Collins winning the ‘B’ in 66.7. In the 800m, again both ’A’ and ‘B’ races went to SLH with Gemma Marr winning in 2.20.4 and Alison Collins running 2.38.5.
Gemma then went on the win the 1500m in 5.12.7 with Michelle Jenkins taking the ‘B’ in the same time. Michelle then ran again in the 3000m ‘A’ and Viv Mitchell ran in the ‘B’ race.
SLH were 3rd in the 4 x 100m and 2nd in the 4 x 400m relays. The Triple jump was another win for the team with Kara Miller covering 11.36m in the ‘A’ and Beth Wilkins 8.93 in the ‘B’. Kara Miller then went on to win the High Jump in 1.40m. A busy Jill Lula placed 2nd in the Javelin with 17.91, won the Hammer Throw with 31.53m and threw the Discus 24.17 for third.
At the Kingsmeadow track this weekend, SLH was represented by four of the club’s veterans in the Surrey Championships who won all their events in fine style.
Pippa Major won the w40 5000m in 19.34, Trudy Kuhn won the w45 5000m in 22.46, Alison Collins won the w40 400m in 64.6, breaking the previous championship record by 1 second and Barry Attwell won the m50 1500m in 4.33.5
At the mid-week Rosenheim match at Croydon Arena, SLH was well represented in most events, but with some athletes delayed by rail delays and hold ups in the event timings, were unable to fill all disciplines, leaving them down in fifth place. Scoring performances as follows:
Third in the 400m hurdles (Paul Mitchell),
first in the 800m (Tom Jenkins),
third in the 100m (Prosper Mwanza),
fifth in the 400m (Paul Mitchell),
third in the 1500m (Barry Attwell),
second in the 200m (Billy Porter),
fourth in the 3000m (Pawel Bal) and
first in the Long Jump (Darren Brown).
There was another win for the prolific Andy Collins last week in the Hillcrest 8km, run over Riddlesdown from Warlingham School, beating Striders rival Justin Macenhill in the process. The two leaders went off course at about 3km because of a marshalling error and had to track back uphill to rejoin the race but were both strong enough to fight back to the lead and Andy finally pulled away from Justin with about 1km to go.
