Last Saturday’s launch of South London Harriers’ new trail race, the Farthing 5 (Km), run in fine conditions over Coulsdon’s Farthing Downs, got off to a flying start. The event which was sponsored by Runathon, Croydon’s specialist running shop, attracted 69 runners of a range of abilities.

The race had an exciting and close finish. The leading trio comprising Mark Humphrey of Belgrave Harriers along with Jim Burdett and Mike Airey, both from SLH, running shoulder to shoulder until around the 4Km mark when Burdett put in a winning surge to reach the finish line first in 17.58. Airey had sufficient strength to break away from Humphrey for 2nd place (1st v40) in 18.16, and Humphrey finished 3rd in 18.37.

SLH took the next three places with Andy Davis 4th in 19.51, Clive Edgington 5th (1st v50) in 20.18 and Pippa Major 1st woman and 6th overall in 20.25.  The 2nd woman’s place went to Joyce Ceara (Epsom Allsorts) who was 23rd overall in 23.24. The battle for 1st v60 runners was won by Clive Beauvais of Ranelagh Harriers (17th overall in 21.54) who beat 18th placed Dave Newland of SLH by 6 seconds.
SLH are hosting a 3 race series of Informal 10k’s on the last Thursday of May, June and July. For more information on the entries and course see www.southlondonharriers.org. First 10k is on 31 May.
