May 13th, 2007: Southern Women’s League Track/Field match 1
Posted by Ian Field at 5:08 pmThe first match at Eastbourne went well with the team finishing 2nd just 5 points behind the winners.
A good overall team effort was capped by sparkling performance by our senior sprinters and junior throwers who won all their events, with the sprinters adding the relay as well ! We failed by just 5 points to win our opening match of this season, and had to settle for 2nd. The coach journey helped to instill a good team spirit amongst all.
Seniors
Sprinters Natalie Bartley and Estelle Dja completely outclassed the opposition in the 100m (12.6 and 13.1) and 200m (25.8 and 27.2) to win both with metres to spare. They were joined by Sian Mitchell and Alecia Alli-ugbaja to win the 4×100m relay with Natalie running a storming last leg. Ever young Alison Collins ran an excellent race in the B 400m (66.2) to finish 2nd and Jessica Case was 3rd in the A race (69.6). Alison also had a good run in the 800m (2:40.3) for 2nd place. Pippa Major and Viv Mitchell scored a double win in the 3000m (11:12 and 11:46.2), with Viv also 3rd in the A 1500m (5:45.7). Hurdler Sian set 2 PBs in the 300mH (49.4) and 80mH (12.8) for U17s. Jessica finished 2nd in both the 100mH (18.1) and the 400mH (76.5), and Alecia was 2nd in the B 100mH (22.1). The 4×400m relay team, Jessica, Alison, Sian and Estelle ran a very respectable 4:28.1 to finish 2nd.

Helen Wilson and Amy Mitchell won a double in the 1500m (5:25.5 and 5:44.4). Naomi Poyser and Maria Kavanagh were both 2nd in their 800m races (2:43.4 and 2:46.5). Georgina West, in her first SLH match, won all 3 throws (Shot 8.65m, Discus 24.67m, Javelin 13.90m) ! Excellent. Lily ably supported Georgina with a PB in the Shot (6.86m) and a good Discus (16.14m) winning both B strings. Amy completed the whitewash in the throws by winning the B Javelin (11.72m).
The day also included some non-scoring events at which SLH were well represented by some of our youngest athletes. Times were as follows :
800m - Ruth Myburgh (2:55.6) Sophie Foreman (2:56.6) Maya Bruney (3:19.6) Chanonne Graham (3:19.6) Tyanna Bibb (3:29.2)
100m - Megan Waller (15.6) Ruth Myburgh (16.4) Maya Bruney (16.8) Tyanna Bibb (17.2) Chanonne Graham (17.2)
A very good effort from all the athletes that competed, and an excellent start to the League. We scored enough points to be 3rd, and with 5 to be promoted from the 25 teams, we are in a good position to start from.
