May 6th, 2007: Young Athletes League - Sutton Arena

Great start to the Young Athletes season. the first match ended in victory for SLH, pushing the home team, Sutton, into second place.

A pleasant day, if a bit windy greeted the athletes at Sutton. It managed to stay dry though. Selection had been difficult, especially in the younger age groups, but it all turned out well. Some good performances from stalwarts as well as newcomers brought the right overall result.

U17 Boys

John Iwudibie and Jacob Andrews both recorded the same time in the 200m (24.0) to start off well. Ben McDaniel won the A 800m in a PB (2:06.2). Daniel Sellman kept his concentration to win the 3000m (9:40.5). John then ran an exceptional 100m (11.7). Matt Grant produced a devastating sprint finish to win a new event for him, the A 400m (54.6).  Newcomer Dominic Steiert won the A 1500m (4:39.4) while Jack won the B race (4:50.9). In the field, John was 3rd in the A high jump (1.60m) and Daniel 3rd in the B HJ (1.45m). Olivier Serviable produced an excellent jump to come 2nd in the Triple (11.06m) and was 2nd in the B Long Jump (5.44m). Jacob Andrews was 3rd in the A LJ (5.48m).

U17 Girls

One woman show I’m afraid. With GCSEs, illness, and a severe shortage of girls in this age group at the club, it was left to Loulou Rowlands to compete alone. She did well to win the A 800m (2:24.3). Hopefully we can get a better turnout next time.

U15 Boys

A full compliment of boys performed well in this age group. Adam Gye, another debutant, won the 800m A race (2:16.0), while Adam Atkins was 2nd in the B (2:34.6). Richard Morris was 2nd in the A 80mH (15.5) while Adam A was 2nd in the B race (17.9). Neil Fuhrmann was 3rd in the A 100m (12.8) while new boy, Afam Adewole was 2nd in the B race (12.5). Richard Morris also competed manfully in the 400m despite being the shortest by several inches to come 3rd in the A race (68.8). Sonny Altendorff was 2nd in the A 1500m (4:46.0) while Gregory Campbell was 3rd in the B (5:19.0). In the field, Toryn Austin was 3rd in the Discus (16.64m), and 3rd in the Shot (6.77m) and 4th in the Javelin (19.60m). Adam Gye was 2nd in the B Shot (6.09m). Neil Fuhrmann jumped superbly to win the A Long Jump with a PB (5.33m), with Adam Atkins 2nd in the B LJ (3.78m).

U15 Girls

Shanice Harrison recorded a PB in the A 200m (28.1) to come 5th, with Harriet Field matching her time (28.1) to win the B race. Hannah Field won the B 800m (2:41.6) while Naomi Poyser, who was ill during the week, coming 4th in the A race, (2:48.8). Hannah then won the B 75mH (17.8), with Janet Foskett unfortunately injuring her leg in the A race. Shanice won the A 100m in an excellent time (13.1), while Janet was 2nd in the B race (13.7). Helen Wilson was 2nd in the A 1500m (5:29.2) with Amy Mitchell 2nd in the B race (5:42.0). In the field, newcomer Georgina West completed a superb double winning the A Discus (24.44m) and the A Shot (8.58m). Lily Holder also threw well winning the B discus (13.60m) and was 2nd in the B Shot (6.49m). In the jumps, Amy Mitchell was 3rd on countback in the A High Jump (1.35m). Hannah recorded a PB in the Long Jump (3.87m).

U13 Boys

Tyrie Obuks took the A 200m by a huge margin to win the A race (28.5) while newcomer Finn Nightingale won the B race (29.1). James Male was 4th in the A 800m (2:50.1). Jack Ralph was 2nd in the A 75mH (16.7), where Saul Thompson looked a natural in the B race which he won in an excellent time (14.9). Danny Holmes made his debut in the A 100m coming 5th (15.0), with Saul Thompson winning the B race (14.8). Debutant Jack Ralph ran well in the A 1500m to come 2nd (5:31.4) while our youngest team member, Ryan Barrett won the B race to huge applause from the crowd, beating several much older boys (5:48.8). In the field, Jack Ralph won the A High jump (1.15m). Finn won the A Shot (5.60m) with Tyrie winning the B (5.19m). Finn also won the A Long Jump (4.02m) with Tyrie again winning the B (3.98m).

U13 Girls

Megan Waller did well to come 3rd in the A 150m (22.1) despite arriving only 2 mins before the starters gun. Hayley Waterer ran her first race for the club coming 4th in the B race (24.6). Ruth Myburgh ran away from the rest in style in the 800m A race to win and record a PB (2:46.5). Jahisha Thomas showed her class romping home well clear of the rest in the A 70mH (10.8). Megan completed the hurdles double winning the B race (14.1). Maria Kavanagh continued her good form winning the A 1200m (4:28.7) while Hayley ran well to get 2nd in the B race (5:01.2). the ever reliable points machine, Jahisha, won the A 75m (10.4) while our youngest girl team member, Anna Jones ran really well in the B race (13.0). In the field, Jahisha won the A High jump (1.25m), while Maria, in her first ever HJ won the B string (1.05m). Hayley was 4th in the A Shot (3.88m). Megan was 3rd in the A long jump (3.70m) while Anna completed her first day of competition with a good LJ (2.35m).

A good day all round was completed by the relays. SLH won the U13B, U13G, U15B 4×100m relays, and were 2nd in the U15G. The U15B won a tremendous battle to finish in 53.5secs with the 2nd and 3rd teams in the race being given 53.6secs !!  Unfortunately all 4 U17 Boys teams were DQ’d so no points at all there. In the 4×400m, SLH won both the U15B and U17B.

The relays completed a great day for 3 of our athletes, Jahisha Thomas, Tyrie Obuks and Finn Nightingale, who all won all 4 of their events. Really well done to them. there were also several PBs during the day, so well done to those athletes as well. The icing on the cake for Jahisha was that she was awarded the Girls Track Athlete of the Match award for her excellent performance in the hurdles. Hope the T-shirt fits !

Final Results : SLH 443.5, Sutton 420, Epsom and Ewell 383, Horsham /Haywards Heath 347.5, East Grinstead 332.5, Redhill and Surrey Beagles 62.5.

Anne and I are looking forward to the next match on Sunday 3rd June at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, Horsham. Details will follow soon. Lets hope we can keep this up. I’m sure we can. We were also really pleased to see our competitors remembering to shake hands with the opposition after each race. This gives a good image to the club, and it would be great if this continues.

Just one extra note of thanks to Maya Bruney, who injured herself just before the match, but still came along to support. Well done Maya.
