St Mary’s College, Twickenham report

Despite the absence of several athletes in our first match of the season, the team finished 3rd with 110 points, well clear of 4th. There were some excellent performances, with special mention to Barry Attwell and Paul Mitchell who covered 10 individual events between them with a positive attitude !

On the track :

Andy Tindall cracked 10mins for the 3000m steeplechase (9:59.5) to win the A race with Paul Mitchell winning the B string (11:52.0). Tom Jenkins sprinted away from the oppostion to win the 800m A race in style (2:01.7) with Mike McManus 2nd in the B race (2:12.7). Barry Attwell, at late notice, finished 2nd in the 5000m (17:11.5) with Andrew Aitken winning the B race (17:27.2). Taiwo Dauda looking very smooth was 2nd in the 400m (56.9) with Mike McManus 3rd in the B string (60.5). U17 sprinters Jacob Andrews (12.1) and John Iwudibie (11.9) finished 4th and 2nd in the 100m, with John also 3rd in the a 200m (24.4). The 4×100m relay team of Darren, Jacob, Aaron Broderick and Kieran finished a close 2nd in 47.1. Our 4×400m team of Taiwo, Darren, Jacob and Paul finished 3rd in 3:58.1.

In the field :

A new star was discovered. In his first ever attempt at the triple jump, Kieran Dawkins jumped 12.42m to win the B string, almost beating captain Darren Brown, who pulled out a big last jump of 12.72m to finish 2nd in the A string. the same pairing won A and B Long Jumps, Darren with 6.28m and Kieran 6.04m. In the High Jump Darren cleared a superb 1.85m to secure 2nd in the A string with U17 John Iwudibie clearing 1.55m for 2nd place in the B string. Peter Wickens did brilliantly after a long lay-off with a shoulder injury to throw a new PB of 51.81m to win the A Javelin.

With our throwers and leading sprinter available for the next match we will be even more competitive. Well done to all athletes that competed in this match, and who have given us a good base to build on.
