April 22nd, 2007: UK Sportshall Final
Posted by Ian Field at 9:34 pm5 Young SLH Athletes travel to Birmingham
On the same day as the London Marathon ! Who planned that ?
The Surrey teams that qualified to represent the South East Region in the UK Sportshall Final included 5 SLH athletes. Our largest representation ever.
U13 Girls - Jahisha Thomas
U13 Boys - Adam Atkins
U15 Girls - Sophie Small, Hannah Field, Harriet Field
A very tough event was enjoyed by all, and an incredible day out. After a long coach journey, the fireworks began proceedings, along with an Olympic style procession of all the teams with their national flags and mascots. As was to be expected, the Irish team made the most noise, as did their supporters. the Scots and Welsh had teams there as well. The competition began with heats on the track, and field events going on, building to the finals along with the relays to finish. Each event had immediate action replays on the big screen of every event. The medals were being presented for each event by a couple of celebrity atheletes. Katherine Merry, the ex-GB Womens 400m runner and Lynn Davies the ex-GB Olympic gold medallist in the Long Jump in 1964.
Adam was part of the U13 Boys team that came away with the silver medal overall. Jahisha’s U13 Girls won bronze. Sophie, Hannah and Harriet competed well against very stiff opposition, and the U15 Girls finished 9th overall out of 14 teams. A good performance considering that the 3 of them, and all the other 3 in the team, have another year in the U15 age group.
The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and will be remembered by those who were there. The level of competition was high, with some outstanding individual performances to be seen. The atmosphere was great. Hopefully we can be sending more people there next year.
