A large number of South London Harriers put their months of training to the test on Sunday to compete in the London Marathon. In far from ideal conditions, many were disappointed with their times, but still impressed the rest of us with some remarkable performances in the very hot weather.
The club’s first finisher in the men’s race was the ever-consistent David Byrne in 2hrs 46mins, competing in the over 40’s category. Chris Phelan was next home in 2hrs 54mins in the over 45 age group, then came Ian Kitching, putting in another stupendous performance as an over 55 year old to finish in 2hrs 55mins. First-timer Andrew Aitken ran a very commendable 2hrs 56mins, and two over 45s, Bob Harrison and David Ogden finished in 2hrs 56 and 2hrs 57 respectively.
The club’s first woman home, running her first marathon, was Sue McDonald in a very fast 3hrs 06mins, with Clare Settle finishing in 3hrs 16mins. Christine Costiff crossed the line in 3hrs 25mins.
Mark Farmer, Martin Wood and Paul Mitchell all crossed the finish line in 3hrs 07mins with Peter Emery completing the course in 3hrs 17mins. Glen Morgan was just two minutes slower in 3hrs 19 and Andrew Davis finished in 3hrs 22. Andy Davison’s time was 3hrs 45.
SLH’s super fit 65 year old, David Newland finished in 3hrs 44.
First-timer, Caroline Walker, produced a very solid 3hrs 50mins and Sylvie Kah 3hrs 54, both in the over-40’s age band, with over 50’s Jane Luxton just missing out on the 4-hour mark to finish in 4hrs 1min.
Colin Young did 3hrs 56, Nigel Bush 4hrs 03, Jennie Burdett 4hrs 04, 60 year old Jake Clausen 4hrs 21, Marketa Martins 4hrs 27. Neil Maury suffered problems on the way round, but still managed to finish in 4hrs 27. Elizabeth Davey did 4hrs 29, Graham Swann 4hrs 47 and Sue Taylor 4hrs 49 .
The Club’s youngsters were also well-represented in the Mini-Marathon. Daniel Sellman was chosen to run for Surrey and finished in 66 place in 14.08 in the boys 15/16 age group.
Running for the London Borough of Croydon in the boys’ 13/14’s were Sam Honey who finished in 16.49, David Sidwell in 16.50 and James McDonald in 19.20. In the girls race for 11/12 year olds, Maria Kavanagh finished in 18.00 mins, Ruth Myburgh in 19.21 and Amy Mitchell in 18.29.
Representing Sutton in the Boys 15/16 age group were Tom Hart and Ben McDaniel finishing in 14.56 and 14.58 respectively and Adam Gye competed in the 13/14’s race finishing in 15.27.
